UMich, CMU, UCLA, or UIUC (Electrical Engineering)

After browsing around, I still feel as if I have some unanswered questions. I'm posting on the UMich board because I feel there are some CC members here who can give me a better response than others.

I plan to major in EE in all of the schools mentioned. However, the problem is that I really do not know where to go. I have many close friends who are going to UMich. A few going to CMU. Despite this, UCLA's weather and environment is what everyone pictures their college life will be like. Also UIUC's EE program seems stellar -- got an e-mail a few weeks ago saying how the average undergraduate makes on $70000 dollars, which is more than the other schools.

Tuition really isn't much of a problem for me seeing as I have residency to none of these schools. With the sudden spike in tuition for all the schools, (UMich 49000~, UCLA 51000~, CMU 53000~) I find as if it really makes little difference. Ultimately, I feel as if the decision comes down to whether I want a more social school in UCLA, a more academic school in CMU, or the in-betweens in UIUC and UMich.

Can anyone help me with my dilemma? :/

I think if you are not too much a party person, U-mich is “social” enough. And for EE, or any engineering programs. U-mich is just about the same as CMU academically, people work so hard at both schools. So I’d go with U-mich if I were you. Although classes at U-mich are kinda big, they do get smaller during your junior or senior year. And student’s been saying that it’s not that big a problem.

I think Michigan is your best bet. Socially, Michigan is on par with UCLA. Academically, it is on par with UIUC and CMU.

Starting salaries are roughly the same at those four schools. At Michigan, Electrical Engineers start at $60,000 on average, but Computer Engineers start at $72,000.

Go for fit.

“Despite this, UCLA’s weather and environment is what everyone pictures their college life will be like.”

Have you ever been to UCLA? It’s so overrated, IMHO, as a collegiate atmosphere. The weather is nice, if you like the same thing everyday. Socially, many of your classmates will be commuters. LA is also an expensive city to live in.
