Today at 9:43 am in What Are My Chances?
I'm an international student studying in Middle East. My high school does not offer any AP Honors but the classwork is AP level. I'm in top 5-6% of the class with over 150 students in total. I want to be an electrical engineer.

My scores are:
SAT: 1910
TOEFL: 105
SAT Subject: Math Lvl2: 790, Physics: 780, Chemistry: 760
High school offers no gpa after class 10
Class 9 gpa: 9.8 (out of 10)
Class 10 gpa: 10 (out of 10)
Class 11 and Class 12 are on the basis of percentile. So even a 70% student can get A if class avg is low.

ECs:
National swimmer
High school swimming champion ( for 5 years)
Science fest winner
Participated in dances, dramas, debates and other cultural activities.
Various relief camps
Director Science
Received Scholar awards at high school for 5 consecutive years.

LORs:
Really good LORs from:
High School Physics Teacher
High School Social Science Teacher
Swimming Coach
School Counselor

Colleges applied to:
UMich (EA) (reach or match)
GAtech (EA) (reach)
UIUC (EA) (reach or match)
Purdue University (EA) (match)
UCLA (match)
UCSD (match)
PennState (Honors program: do not consider SAT, just high school grades and essays) (match)
UT, Austin (match)
UMinn (match)

Please chance me on getting any of the above universities.

Michigan and UIUC are more selective than GT. UCLA and UT-Austin are as selective as GT. All five of those schools are reaches for international applicants. Purdue is a safety.

I don’t think Purdue engineering would be a safety with SAT 1910. It would be a match at best. It is below the average of enrolled engineering freshmen in 2013 which was before they joined the CommonApp.

billscho, the SAT is not even required for international students. Furthermore, I am pretty sure that the OP has over a 680 on the M section of the SAT. As an international student, his CR and W sections will not be expected to be higher than 500. His 100+ on the TOEFL will more than take care of his proof of English proficiency. I have seen many students apply to Purdue. the OP is most likely in.

@Alexandre Is UMich CoE still a reach with amazing essays, national swimming awards and great LORs?
My friends with even lower stats have got in.

Maybe your friends were lucky. I know of 6 students who were admitted from Dubai last year. Their ACT average was 32, their SAT Math average was 755, their CR average was 685, their W average was 715. Five of the six were enrolled in the British system and had a majority of A* in their GCSEs. All five of them were taking 4 A Level, and their predictions ranged from AAAA to AAAB. The sixth was in an IB school and was taking HL Mathematics, HL Biology, HL English and HL History as well as SL French and SL Chemistry. She was predicted a 38 out of 42.

I do not recall a student who was admitted into Michigan with less than a 2000 on the SAT for some time now.

But what is his ACT score? I know students with 1800+ SAT but 31+ in ACT and got admitted. Also, it depends on the CR+M score more than the total composite score.

USA0815, is your friend now enrolled at Michigan now? What is his nationality? How did he do on the Mathematics section of the SAT? Regardless, getting into Michigan requires luck these days. They received over 11,000 international applications last year, and admitted fewer than 1,000 of them. The CoE is even more selective. You obviously have a shot, but like any international applicant, the odds are not good.

You friend was very lucky USA0815. He must have had a hook. I have not seen an international student with such scores get into Michigan’s CoE…ever! Are you sure he is at Michigan-Ann Arbor?

Or he just did poorly (relatively speaking of course) on the SAT but did great in all other academic aspects. I just haven’t seen a non-Michigan resident with a sub 700 on the SAT Mathematics get into the CoE, but I am sure some do get accepted, and this must be one such case. But like I said, regardless of grades/scores, Michigan is a reach for all international applicants.
