^… now I don’t really agree with that…

A 3.5 uw does make it a reach.

Ugh I just hate my unweighted gpa… I could’ve taken easier English classes and social studies classes and gotten a 4.0 unweighted, but I was always told that a B in an honors course is better than an A in a regular course. Now I’m finding out that’s not the case because so many schools use UW gpa’s. Grrr. And as far as the other stuff on my app, it was all pretty good…good enough to get in to every other school I applied to besides MIT where I was also deferred. Michigan was my second choice too… Oh well. I guess I’ll be happy at Minnesota, Illinois or OSU ;)

A 3.5 definitely makes Michigan a reach.

mk13bball, do not give up on Michigan. Your stats are solid. Michigan is a reach, but it is not out of reach. I hope you get in.

“I was always told that a B in an honors course is better than an A in a regular course. Now I’m finding out that’s not the case because so many schools use UW gpa’s.”

But… at really selective schools (which definitely applied to Michigan this year), schools ideally want “A’s” in the most rigorous classes. This question gets asked at almost every info session I have ever attended, and that’s how the admissions officers usually respond.

Jshain- that doesn’t answer the question… Thats just the generic cop out answer

Alexandre- thanks. But in all honesty I would rather go somewhere else for half the price. As much as I liked Michigan, it certainly doesn’t look like I’ll get anywhere near as much merit money as other schools which are just as good. I’ll still hold on to minimal hope though. .01% chance i will go to umich :)

^ I think that whole mindset is referring to it being better for you in real life, not in the admissions process.

ie. a lie teachers tell to get us to push ourselves

Bc- I agree with the mindset completely… It’s just annoying when someone asks that question and they dont get an answer

“Jshain- that doesn’t answer the question… Thats just the generic cop out answer”

mk13, I used to think the exact same thing as you however, now, I really think it is the cold, cruel, reality. Taking the most rigorous classes AND getting (mostly) A’s is crucial. The applicant pools at the most selective schools have gotten so competitive. B’s are “the enemy”…

I took the most rigorous courseload my school has ever had. I just got too complacent with my grades I guess. Luckily I have started turning my grades around now in preparation for college. Just got a 99% on a univ of ill calculus 2 test

don’t worry, u got michiganrejects.com if everything doesn’t pan out

He is too good for OSU! hehe! Where is Sparkeye when he is needed!

At any rate, I think mk13bball is a resident of Illinois and that he is interested in Engineering. UIUC = Michigan Engineering and the difference in cost of attendance will likely be around $20,000/year. I think UIUC is the way to go.

Actually, Ohio state and Minnesota are both ~10k cheaper than UIUC due to scholarships. So many tough decisions! You have any insight to whether it would be worth the extra 10k for UIUC? I know all the schools I’m considering are very good for ChemE, so I just don’t know which one to choose! I’m also accepted to purdue and Wisconsin, which are close to the in state cost of UIUC.

Chem E? Minnesota all the way baby! Besides, Minneapolis is a nice town. Of course, Wisconsin is also awesome, and Madison is amazing. You definitely have a touch choice. I would say it falls between Minnesota, UIUC or Wisconsin. OSU and Purdue are out given your circumstances.

I would say Michi… ooooohhhh

Well ur from Il so u can deal with the cold, Wisconsin would be nice. UIUC would be good too. Minn, well, they’ve got a cool football stadium

Thanks for the help guys! I’m leaning towards Minnesota right now simply because I’ve heard how awesome their ChemE program is. I won’t be able to make my decision until I find out about all my RD schools though (MIT, Mich, Rice, Vandy)… Thank you all very much for your input! CC is awesome. :)

Oh, one more quick question… why is OSU out of the question? I mean… Any reason other than this is a Mich forum? Haha

OSU is very good. Its school of Engineering is on par with Minnesota’s. However, in Chem E, Minnesota is among the top 5 whereas OSU is not among the top 20. Personally, I would choose Minnesota or Wisconsin. Minnesota is slightly stronger in Chem E, but Wisconsin is slightly stronger overall and campus life at Wisconsin is more fun than at Minnesota. Besides, Madison is amazing. UIUC is also good. Of course, if you get into MIT, all bets are off. Rice is also interesting, and they tend to be generous with aid/merit scholarships.

True, Madison rocks. I’ve been there on a few occasions. Minneaplois was pretty cool too though. I was surprised how clean it was compared to chicago
