UMich Early Action Oct SAT scores

Hi ppl so I’m planning to apply for EA UMich and its website says that the the school needs to receive SAT scores before November 1st deadline,

However, according to collegeboard, it takes around one to two weeks for colleges to receive SAT scores after we send our scores

What do you guys think? If I immediately send my oct SAT score right after the score comes out will I still be able to make it for EA??

UMich does not guarantee October scores will arrive in time to be used for EA. If they arrive in time, yes, if not, you will be put into the regular admission group if no other scores were previously submitted. One way to assure they will arrive on time is to identify Mich in your test application as one of the colleges to automatically receive scores upon release. That results in the fastest form of delivery (colleges often get them a day or two before you even get the scores online). That designation had to be made within 9 days after the test date, i.e., by October 12 for the Oct 3 test, and if you did that you will likley have no issue with Mich. There is a decent chance that ordering the test scores sent via regular delivery on the day they are released online will also result in timely delivery so you can still try that method (MIch warns that it does not want rush delivery).

As to what happens if you are not timely, be aware of how Mich actually releases decisions. Beginning early Dec, it starts rolling out decisions for those who previously applied and for new applicatns thereafter. However, it does tend to sit on a lot of decisions in that rolling admissions process while waiting to see more of the pool of those who apply. All EA guarantees is that you will receive some decision by December 23, either, admit, deny, or deferred for future consideration. If you submit an application by Nov 1 that gets kicked over to regular admission because scores come in too late, you may still receive an admit or deny decision by Dec 23, but won’t be told, like EA applicants, that they are deferring your application (you instead will be told nothing until an admit or deny decision is actually made).

If you have previously taken the ACT or SAT you should submit those scores to Michigan. That, along with your other items (transcripts, grades, recommendations etc) received by Michigan by Nov 1 will count as a complete application and put you in the EA pool. As long as your updated Oct. SAT scores arrive before your application is evaluated, Michigan will consider them. Make sure you designate UMich per @drusba when you take the test.

I would advise you to actually submit your Common App at least 1 week prior to the date, and definitely not on Nov 1. Sometimes (for whatever reason) the applications are received late, and the systems can be overloaded by so many students submitting their applications in the last few days, there have been data glitches too. There is also the possibility of a local problem, like your internet or power being out. I’ve seen this happen several times with delays of 24-48 hours and the students missing their EA deadlines for reasons unknown. Maybe the CA payment system is down or you have a problem with your CC … lots of things can go wrong.

I have also run into problems with browsers, Firefox has had problems (popup blockers, adblock, etc… , Chrome seems to work OK ) which often manifests itself when generating the .pdf file and you get a please be patient message. You have no way to tell if the Common App servers are backed up or if your browser is fubar’d or there is some other communication problem. That is not something your want to deal with on Nov 1 at 11:59pm.

@drusba @TooOld4School First of all, greatly appreciate of the replies from you two. I was curious that after checking their website, they said that they do not accept rushed SAT paper scores but do accept rushed electronic scores via RUSH electronic mailing option

Will rush electronic mailing option be on time for colleges to receive my score then? Since collegeboard states that “Once your request is processed, rush reporting sends your score report within two working days (not counting holidays and weekends) either electronically or by first-class mail, depending on how each institution receives scores. You should check with the college before ordering rush reports, because institutions may not review your scores until their next scheduled delivery date. If you are applying early decision, check to see if the college accepts October and November scores to meet deadlines.”

Also from UMich’s website, “Unfortunately, scores from October ACT or SAT tests will not arrive in time to complete an application for Early Action. If you have previously taken the ACT with Writing or SAT and are taking the test again in October, you must send in your previous scores to complete your application.”

Does that mean I need to first submit my pervious two test scores (i took 3 in total) and then add on my oct test score when it’s available in order to get considered as an EA applicant?

last but not least, if nothing above works, what if I personally print out the test results and sent the paper with my results directly to the admissions office through expedite shipping or some sort then send the electronic results at the same time? (just curiously asking haha)

You only need to submit one or the other of the ACT or SAT to meet the test score requirement prior to 11/1. It may be an advantage to report all of your scores:

https://umich.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2079/~/how-are-test-results-used-in-the-admissions-review-process%3F

Michigan will only accept test scores coming directly from the ACT or SAT sources, not your print-out, and electronic transmission minimizes delay. Physical mail at UM has to go through the mail office, then to admissions, then someone has to enter it … this can take several days or more.

Make sure you order previous SAT scores separately-- they won’t send until October scores come out if you group them together! Also you should go ahead and order now, it takes a while for CB to send the scores, and Umich will only consider you for Early Action if your scores are received before Nov 1

Typically, SAT score report takes 3 to 5 working days. It may take longer during prime time. Rush score only makes it slight faster and still takes 2-3 working days. Most schools in the US are receiving scores electronically but cb does provide paper score as well. When a rush score is requested in paper format, they will express it to the school, however, many schools use a PO Box address that cannot receive non USPO delivery.
To submit current score before deadline to make your EA application complete while pending for additional score is recommended by the admission office. You may indicate that in the Other Information box. You should submit your Oct score with the free score report to increase the chance to make it before the application review.

thanks ya’ll sent out my scores today!

giovan did you rush electronically or send regular?

I did rush electronically for sure! @kevlcc

An update for you guys Collegeboard adpoted a new system and my scores were delievered for EA just in time before the deadline!

I was wondering, do any of your wolverine access portals say your tests have been received? Mine says still not received…

@giovan , when you say delivered, does it just say sent on the collegeboard website instead of pending?

@TalkTheTalk I actually don’t have access for my wolverine access portal cuz I haven’t received my UMich ID yet. Are they supposed to send me a confirmation letter that includes it?

@collegefan909124 yes it does say the scores were sent to the specific colleges instead of saying pending!

@TalkTheTalk yes I feel you now I don’t get why Wolverine Access still appears that it’s not yet received eventhough collegeboard said the scores are sent…

@giovan my god I’m so paranoid right now. Are we ok since collegeboard did send it before the deadline?

@TalkTheTalk ^ same that is exactly my concern now. I don’t know we might have to just wait tho cuz maybe they just haven’t updated the sat scores onto their portal. You can go check wolverine’s app status (view application data->other info->notification plan status) whenever you have time. Mine says “Early Action-requested”.

@giovan ugh… yeah I know same for me too. If they don’t consider us early action applicants, I think we can make a case to be considered early action still because it collegeboard DID send them before nov 1st deadline so.
