I want to go to University of Michigan, but I'm still deciding between two majors, one of which is an engineering major. If I just apply to the overall school and get accepted, can I later go into their College of Engineering or would I have to originally apply to the College of Engineering? Also is it harder to be admitted into the general University or into the College of Engineering? Basically, can I apply to the general University and then AFTER I am accepted switch into the College of Engineering?? Thanks!!

You actually do not choose a major until sophomore, and you may still change to a different one afterward. The intended major on the CA is for survey purpose only. Indeed, more than half of the students end up with a different major at the end anyway. CoE is more competitive than LSA. You do not apply to “the overall school” or “general university”. You have to apply to one of the school within UMich (e.g. Ross, LSA, CoE, etc). You may transfer from LSA to CoE after freshmen, but it is still somewhat competitive and you may need to make up for the freshmen requirement.

Also, one of the supplemental essay is “why this school?” that you need to write specific about the school you are applying to (such as LSA or CoE). You better go through the application thoroughly now.
