umich financial aid for out of state...that bad?

is it really that horrible?
are there any exceptions?

thanks

I'm really worried as well. I have an EFC of $0 and my family of 5 makes 22,000 AGI a year with no assets.

I hope I get a good FA package because I don't want to waste my time at a nearby community college.

I posted elsewhere, but here is my package again.

Out of State
Michigan Grant : 15000
Pell & ACG : 3000
Federal Work Study: 3000
Loans (sub, unsub, perkins): 6000

Total aid is 27k
FAFSA EFC is 3k
COA is 44K
Gap (above EFC) is $14,000 per year, and that's with 3k in work study, and $6k in loans. That would be $80k in loans after 4 years.

I knew there would be a gap from aid abve the Efc, but come on, that's not even in the realm of possiblities for my family. I am so fortunate to have some other opportunities, so I'm over it. When I began my search, U of M was top choice. I grew up on Maize and Blue. Now, I've moved on.

OOS to a Public Univ, from what I see, is for rich kids only.

Oh wow that really sucks! Like that is unbelievably horrible. I have an EFC of ZERO, goodness knows what I'm going to get.

And I just found out they reduce grants if you get outside scholarships!!!

What is up with that?!? I'm receiving a scholarship from HSF and RMHC, but what's the point if my loans remain the same.

I thought grants were offset AFTER family obligation and loans?

No they aren't. They reduce your grant award first and then your loans.

My D got her Financial aid info today.

Out Of State
Michigan Grant : 3250
Pell & ACG : 2150
Federal Work Study: 3000
Loans (sub, unsub, perkins): 6000

Total aid is 14400k
FAFSA EFC is 3500k
COA is 44K
Gap (above EFC) is $29,600 per year, and that's with 3k in work study, and $6k in loans. That would be $120k in loans after 4 years.

No way can we afford that.

Michigan Grant: 15782
Michigan Tradition Scholarship: 10000
Pell & ACG: 5050
Work Study: 3000
Loans : 6000

Total Aid: 39832
FAFSA EFC: 0
COA: 44000
GAP: 4168 + 6000 loans = 10168 a year * 4 = 40672 total

Mine's really good actually. However, without the michigan scholarship, It would've been similar to most of yours (>80k debt). No way did I expect this; it just sucks that I won't be attending Umich :( Screw you Ross admission committee

Mine was really bad as well. I think there was a 20,000 gap btw my EFC and what they offered. No way I'm going there now

was it this bad last year and the previous as well? It sucks that such a great school is only for the rich. :(
