UMich Freshmen and cars

What is the UMICH policy on freshman and cars? The website says freshman are eligible for staorage permit. Does that mean freshman can have a car but can't drive within the campus?
Also, is car a necessity in Ann Arbor?

you don’t need a car at all in Ann Arbor.

you don’t need a car first year of college and yeah like above post, a car really isn’t necessary. Parking in a city like ann arbor is a pain in the ass and the shuttle bus is free for U of M students

if freshmen do take cars, how far away from the central campus would they be? i might want to bring one so i can get home and back without my parents having to drive 3.5 hrs just one way to come and get me and another 3.5 hrs to get back home.

[Student Parking](http://pts.umich.edu/permit_parking/students.php#eligible)

A limited amount of parking is available but it is either on North Campus, downtown or south of the stadium so it is not convenient for a freshman in a dorm on central campus and you probably wouldn’t use it except to go home. Depending on where you live, you may be able to catch a ride or train home.

If you are in a north campus dorm, the car by Bursley or Baits may be a nice thing to have.

If you have a friend with an apartment or house and they don’t use their parking space you could keep a car there.

You definitely don’t need a car especially as a freshman and driving and parking in Ann Arbor can be a pain in the ass. I didn’t have a car until I was a senior and didn’t feel like I needed one.

Thanks, all.

You don’t need a car, but it is obviously nice to have one. I’ve had my car here since sophomore year and could not function without it.

You won’t do a ton of driving on campus because of parking, but if you plan on grocery shopping, movies, out to eat anywhere not in downtown Ann Arbor, etc. you need a car.

Hi, I’m a sophomore with a car on campus that lives in a dorm. First of all, its nice to have a car on campus. Its not required since all the buses run to groceries and etc, but if you can bring one, it is really beneficial. If you live on north you can get a parking spot on Baits I or Bersley parking lot for around $300/year. I live in central and I usually just use the car on weekends and sometimes weekdays and I have no problem finding a parking spot without a parking meter around streets like tappan and etc. It takes a bit of time to get to the car (like 5 to 10min depending where it is), but if you can afford it, its so much faster than the bus. So, if you can afford it, bring it.

is it hard to ballot for a parking space?
