umich give a lot of aid to oos?

do they?
tuition is ridiculous for oos.
please tell me theyre generous.

and how do you get a full ride?

No. They're not generous. Find a Shipman scholar for full ride advice.

But they do have OOS scholarships. For underrepresented states.

Yeah, they are certainly not "generous". It depends if you're talking about need-based or merit-based aid. Need-based is good for a public school, merit aid is kinda slim but those full rides are out there if you've got the academic firepower for it. Usually if you have what it takes to be a Harvard admit, you'll get significant merit aid from uMich.

What type of "academic firepower" would you generally need to be a Shipman scholar so to speak if the essays, recs, etc. are good and you're instate???

Can you mention things such as that your family is already paying full time for another student (the out-of-state fee)? Or do you have to mention things that you have no choice over, such as poor family or w/e?

well, as far as academic firepower, I'd say you'd need at least a 1500/34 on your SAT/ACT. your UW GPA will probably need to be higher than a 3.85 and you have to take an extremely challenging courseload. I don't think they looked at essays too much cuz my essays sucked. I think they might also weigh in extracurriculars such as meaningful research and significant volunteer work.

I got two (small) scholarships and only had a 1460/34 on my SAT/ACT (BUT never sent in my ACT score) and a 3.6 to 3.7-ish UM GPA. My essays for UM had typos in them (if I recall reading over them correctly) and I spent an hour on all of them versus the days on everything else (I procrastinate sometimes, okay?). My extracurriculars were good, though. I was really active in student government and other leadership positions and got lots of math awards.

Two years ago, a girl at my school turned down MIT for a full ride to UMich. We live in Ohio, so full funding for the school for out of state applicants does exists. However, this girl was valedictorian, captain of two sports, 4 years of school student counicl president, president of pep club, coordinated dances for different grades, Russian immigrant, and really high scores, you know, the typical student :)

I got a 20k per year scholarship with a 1530/2290/34, 4.0 UW, and 17 AP classes. I was val, class vp, and held leadership positions in four other clubs. I also played football, was a national merit finalist and an ap national scholar as a junior. I did a significant research project my junior year and also had 300+ volunteer hours.
Sorry if that sounded really cocky or whatever.

maguo has some ownage stats.

ya.. I feel totally deaded right now....

and for the record, I didn't see a penny from UMICH :( - not even eligible for work study ;(

There are approximately 50 shipman scholars out of all the apps Michigan gets, and about 40 of these are oos. So you have to be pretty good, statswise and otherwise.

Should I bother with my essays if I am looking for some scholarship money?

I can either write nice generic essays about my ecs and stuff or I can go really out on a limb and write truly unique, good essays, but I don't want to risk them not liking the essay if it really won't help me much.

It's a really fine line. 1530/2290/34/4.0/17 works for $20k, but my 1510/2250/32/3.9/13 didn't get me a cent. My EC's were pretty good too (worthy of a harvard and MIT waitlist anyway). I don't wanna call it a crapshoot, but if your numbers are in that area, it's really tough to tell. If they're not, you pretty much have no shot.

I would say, beyond the very top, scholarships are mainly a tactic to get kids from underrepresented minorities, genders (in certain areas/schools), states, countries, socioeconomic situations, and high schools to go to Michigan.

which states will increase you chances?

Off the top of my head...Montana, Wyoming, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas...? Places like that.

I would. I'd do my best on the app as a whole. The better you state your case the better your odds for cash.

dont be discouraged yet! im an overrepresented asian female from an overrepresented state (new jersey) and i got a 16k scholarship from them.. i had a 2250 but only a 3.75UW.. and when i went to orientation and looked at the printout they gave me it said my michigan gpa was only a 3.4 or 3.5 i forgot, and htey had my old sat scores which were 2130. i did have really solid ECs but my essays were just.. solid. nothing more. i guess i was just really fortunate.
