Hi so I have recently been accepted into Umich and its honors program as a freshmen for this fall of 2018 and have a few questions. I’m currently hoping to do a biology/chemistry major and hope to do a lot of research.
Can you do the honors program with another learning community (say, WISE or MRADS)? If yes, would you recommend it? Would you recommend honors over the others or vice-versa?
How was the workload for the honors program? Did you ever feel swamped?
Hi there, congrats on getting accepted by LSA Honors! I am currently a sophomore in the Honors program.
I believe you CAN do the Honors program with another learning community, but if you do so you wouldn't get honors housing (South Quad). You'll just live with whichever other community you get into. However, I would not recommend doing this because it can be a tremendous amount of work. I have a friend who have done Honors + HSSP, and they ended up having to take a bunch of extra classes they didn't need, had to take double honors organic chemistry, and in the end they were miserable.
Not trying to discourage you, and the workload depends a lot on what other community you join, so I’d look closely into each program before you decide. Bottom line, learning communities are meant to be social and fun, not tedious and painful.
Workload is not bad for the Honors program itself; I was able to do well while maintaining a health social life. You'll be fine as long as you don't party TOO much.
PM me if you have any more question regarding the Honors program or life at UMich in general! Go Blue.
