UMich MT SAT's

I know there have been other posts regarding the SAT’s and Musical Theatre Majors on this board but I was curious about the SAT II’s. Obviously it is clear that if you took multiple SAT II’s, and did well, they would help you. My question is are they really important for students who have good grades and regular SAT scores? Meaning if I did not take them, could it potentially hurt me? For the people who have applied (and gotten in), or with children who have, what was your experience with the SAT’s like?
Thank you so much!

The SAT IIs are not required at UMich for MT. Thus it absolutely cannot hurt you to NOT have taken them. However, if you did take them and do well, the scores will be seen on the SAT score report and could conceivably help. I'm saying this about any college that doesn't require the SAT IIs where you take them and submit them. If you don't do well, it should not hurt as they were not required in the first place.

That said, my D applied to 8 BFA in MT programs. None required the SAT IIs. One school, NYU, simply recommended them but did not require them. However, she took three SAT IIs (one of which was Writing which at the time was not part of the regular SAT exam). She submitted all of her scores. Her regular SATs were very good and beyond what was required to get into any of her schools or beyond the mid range of SAT stats for accepted students at her schools. However, two of her SAT II subject tests were extremely high. We will never know what helped or not when admitted to colleges (it is not like they tell us) but I can't help but think that those very high SAT II scores may have helped with scholarships, but I have no idea. In her case, since she graduated high school in three years and just had freshman and sophomore grades (then first half of junior year) and took the SATs and SAT Subject Tests as a tenth grader, I imagine it helped to do well on the Subject Tests to show readiness even if she wasn't doing four years of HS. So, that is a particular circumstance where I could see it helping with documentation of academic achievement.

But again, SAT II scores can't hurt you if they are not required (if you don't take them or don't do well on them) but have the potential of helping you if you do well, or maybe even toward scholarship money, but this is not any direct information from a particular school but simply an overall observation.

My son is a sophomore MT at UMich and he did not take any SAT II's.
