Hey guys - I need some help here. Which is a better choice - UMich or Boston College? I would love to be in Boston and get out of the midwest, and I love the BC campus, but Michigan would be significantly less expensive. And, I am starting to wonder if BC is overrated b/c of it's location. Plus - I'm guessing Michigan will have a much more interesting mix of kids. Which has a better rep nationally? Any thoughts would be appreciated...

What do you plan on majoring in?

Eventually Law School - in the meantime, communications or maybe history.

Michigan, can't go wrong.

University of Michigan.

well, actually, not to diss Michigan or anything because I love the school, but they have a pretty bad communications dept. They basicially shut the dept. down about 7 years ago and though it is running again it is not very good.

edited. misread

Don't go to a school based on a single department, especially if you don't know what you're doing. Great majors for pre-law: history, communications, Organizational studies, and American Culture. Michigan is better than BC in most of these areas and significantly better overall. If Michigan is cheaper, it's almost a no-brainer.

I think your thinking OP is right on the mark. The only reason to go to BC is to get away for 4 years. Now that is not a bad reason if you can afford it.

UMich definitely. It's better academically than BC, and it's cheaper too.

UMich, no contest.

U of M.....

u o michigan

If you can deal with the size, go to Mich.

BC has a great communications dept so if you prefer that, dont feel bad.

michigan isn't really that big. I mean, it's not even the biggest in the state.

Michigan for sure. From reading your post, it seems like you're an in-state student, so UM would be a STEAL compared to BC. Nothing against BC, but take advantage of the fact that your in-state school is a top 5 public.

Thanks for all your input...any thoughts on which has a better national reputation?

Michigan................................

BC has a lot of prestige lately, but to me it is more like social prestige. I went to high school in the Boston area, and back then, it was not a big deal. Admissions are competitive because of the location and quality of the campus. It offers an environment that a lot of people want, socially and sportswise. Classes are probably smaller at BC, and access to professors better, but I would still say that Michigan is better academically, and a better value costwise.

I would say that BC is regarded as somewhat better academically, but for in state, you should like the fit of BC a whole lot more to justify the much higher cost than for UMich. Especially, if there is a strong likelihood of you going to law school, where your employment chances will hinge more on the reputation of your law school than undergrad.
