Hey there fellow Michigan hopefulls, I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me a little bit of insight into my college desicion.

I'm a michigan resident and am currently undecided in my college choice, it's basically down to MSU or Umich. Obviously U of M has more prestige when it comes to name sake on the diploma, but is that where the prestige ends or does it tangibly transfer into better job prospects? Also how do the buisiness departments in particular compare, again, one significantly better?

Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it!

ps. I have also considered central mich., if anyone has any pos. or negative ideas towards that prospect...

University of Michigan has one of the best if not THE best undergraduate business programs in the country. Currently it is ranked 3rd by US news (behind UPenn Wharton and MIT), but the Wall Street Journal, which bases their rankings entirely on employer feedback, ranked Michigan business (graduate) number 1 in the WORLD...ahead of harvard, penn, mit, cal, dartmouth, etc. Currently, only a two year program exists (i.e. you start in LSA and apply for transfer for junior year), but in the next two years, they plan to add a four year program. Both the undergrad and grad have the highest reputations among employers.

Hmmm, if i'm not accepted now, do you think it would be worth transfering into sophmore year?

I'm pretty hesitant about rather or not i'll even get in, i'm instate, 3.5 recalculated with an uptrend from soph. to junior year. Good Ec's and a 25 ACT, do you think i've got a shot?

The one big difference between Michigan business and MSU, is that getting into Michigan's Business school is very, very competitive. You're going to have to work extremely hard to get in and then it's not guaranteed. So if Business is definitely what you want to do, the safe option is MSU. If you're willing to take the risk, or if what you want is a degree from Michigan, then go there (if you get in.) My sons had friends who went to Michigan to try and get into the business school. Of the ones who didn't get in, some transferred to MSU because Business was the most important part. Some changed majors and stayed at UMich, because they wanted their diploma from there. All have done just fine.

As the above poster said though: Michigan has one of the best business schools in the country. Only you can decide how important that is to you. CMU would be a distant third. Unless money is important to you. It's a lot cheaper and they would offer much more in scholarship money to someone like you.

Have you even visited all three? You need to know what's right for you.
