I just got accepted into Umich LSA a few days ago. Fortunately/unfortunately, my ED II decision for NYU will come out in 8 days. I got the housing change from NYU so at this point I think I am in. If I do get the acceptance letter to CAS, I will obviously have to go, but I still like Umich a lot. One of the main reasons I ED II’ed to NYU was because I took my Umich defferal as a rejection. Since Umich doesn’t superscore, my SAT was a whole 100 points lower for them and my essays weren’t as good as my NYU essay either. The acceptance surprised me and now I’m stuck in a situation where I don’t know if I want to go to NYU or Umich. I love the fact that NYU is in the city. I’ve lived within a hour train ride from NYC for pretty much my whole life and I am still mesmerized by it no matter how many times I go. If I choose NYU, I will have access to a future in business right in front of me. I have many connections in major IBs and smaller advisory firms that can help me get internships in the years to come starting from this summer. With Umich it isn’t as straight forward, but I absolutely love the student environment there from the big campus to sports games to frat parties. If somehow the housing change doesn’t work or I end up in LSP then I will be more than happy going to Umich.
Right now I am leaning towards NYU and as such, probably won’t be withdrawing my ED II application solely because it would probably give me an easier path to a better future. I like both the NYU campus(or lack of a campus) and Umich campus and I can see myself fitting into both schools. One concern that I have is the general view and education provided both schools in terms of LSA and CAS economics.
Sorry for the long rant. I am really excited about being accepted by Mich and having the housing change for NYU, but am unsure of which to choose…if I even have a choice. Money isn’t an issue for both schools. I’ll be looking to get into Ross/Stern, but that isn’t that big of a concern right now. I’m just assuming that I’ll stay in CAS/LSA especially if I choose NYU since I heard that Stern is a good amount harder than Ross.
You cannot withdraw from NYU if admitted, so wait to hear back from NYU, and if you are admitted, you must go. For now, I recommend you do not get used to the idea of Michigan. The less attached you are to it, the easier it will be to accept your commitment to NYU.
I don’t think your future would necessarily be brighter simply because you went to NYU vs. Michigan. I knew tons of Michigan grads in the business world in New York, and now that I work in the Seattle tech industry I still know tons of Michigan grads. They have an enormous network and Ross alumni are a tight-knit group (as are Michigan grads in general). I always joke that 50% of my friends went to either Michigan or Penn State.
That said, if you applied ED you have to go to NYU, so don’t dwell on Michigan too much. Since you only have 8 days, sit tight and see what happens. The choice here is easy: if you get into NYU you go there. if you don’t, you go to Michigan. Don’t stress out over this
HRSMom, I am not sure one can pull the plug this late in the game, since the decision was likely already made. I agree that he could have withdrawn from NYU in January, but at this time, I think it may be too late. He loses nothing by calling the admissions office at NYU and asking though. But if he wishes to do so, he should do it immediately.
Yeah, what my thought was that I had to make the decision within 5 or so days since I could probably pull the NYU application out still. At this point I think I am set on NYU though. Either way I will be more than happy with both schools with only slight regret for the one I don’t go to.
Spoke to my counselor today. Parents definitely still want me to go to NYU. After speaking to my counselor and rethinking everything, I realized that I want Mich in every aspect except for potential job placement and internships. If I go to NYU then I’ll have easier access to internships already set up for me and interviews that one of my parents(who has been on wall st since early 2000s) can help me get. My parents have been telling me that even though it isn’t stern, it would be favorable for me to go to CAS econ with a possibility of an internal transfer to stern. At the end the decision is up to me still, but how do CAS and LSA econ compare when it comes to wall st placement? I don’t believe that they are entirely equal and I am willing to sacrifice a more enjoyable college experience at Mich for a chance at an easier and potentially better path to a better future.
Another problem obviously arises in that decision date for NYU is in 5 days. If I do choose to stay with Mich(I’ll talk to parents, counselor, etc about this again tomorrow), then I’ll call NYU to withdraw my application Friday morning.
Normally I’d think getting accepted by Mich like this right before my ED II decision would be a blessing…don’t know how I feel anymore. Its even more stressful.
Did you apply to Ross EA? Your alternative is to apply to Ross at the end of your freshman year. The admission rate is abut 40%, but much higher as your college GPA approaches 4.0 . That would open up more internship and eventual placement opportunities for you in both finance and consulting. Your overall college experience is probably going to be better in Ann Arbor than NYC too. You can also double-major in Econ if you want.
I would talk it over with your parents carefully. NYU’s proximity to Wall Street may trump all other factors, you could potentially intern or work part-time there.
Obviously NYU is the better choice from a job placement perspective since NYU Econ is a very prestigious department but if you really want to go to Mich that is not a bad choice. It’s more likely with NYU but Mich can get you to Wall Street as well especially if you are able to transfer into Ross in your sophomore year.
@TooOld4School@qwertyzxc Yes I did apply ross pre admit. They’ll have my semester grades for the pre admit evaluation and those were very good(grades and course rigor for first semester were pretty much top 15 or even top 10 school level). Like I said before, I very much value my college experience although not as much as my future after college and its not like I’ll hate my college experience at NYU, its just that I know I’ll like it A LOT more at mich.
So I guess NYU CAS econ > Mich LSA econ then? and stern finance over ross finance? All of this in terms of a future in business in NYC.
NYU CAS or Stern, is going to be better because you only have to walk a few blocks to be in the financial district. Michigan is going to be a better, more complete college experience and will have many more opportunities outside of NYC. Which is more important to you?
I’d recommend withdrawing from NYU’s ED. You have lived within an hour of NYC your entire life. You plan to have a career in NY. College provides an opportunity to get out of your comfort zone, meet people dissimilar to you, involve yourself in all kinds of new activities and experiences. That is unlikely at NYU. NYU does not have a typical college vibe or experience. Going to Michigan will be an opportunity to sample what the rest of the country offers without having to commit to it. A chance to go beyond Longg Island or Westchester. Many of the NYers I know who have never spent any time outside NYState have a narrow NY centric view of the world. Many are clueless about so many things while having the self impression that they are sophisticated, worldly and above. Many are very accomplished but when they start talking about nearly anything, they reveal how parochial (and privileged) they are. If you go to Michigan you will meet people from all over. You will be in a new environment and you’ll have an opportunity to learn about the people and the geographic region that is new to you. Isn’t experiencing new things and going beyond your comfort level what college is capable of offering? You already have a network in NY. You can have a much broader one by going to Michigan.
@TooOld4School Now that you word it like that, I don’t know. I’ll probably have to talk to people again about this tomorrow…College experience vs future after college. The obvious choice would be future after college right, since life is more than 4 years, but I don’t know, since I know that Mich also has a highly regarded arts and science econ program and business program.
@lostaccount Definitely something I will take into consideration. Like I said, everything points to Mich except for the fact that I could have an easier time with internships and such especially with my parent working literally minutes away from me and could probably connect me with people during lunchtime just about every other day. If I could get over this and be convinced that Michigan will provide me a great path to wall st too, then there won’t even be any competition anymore.
Your early adult years are the most formative years of your life; the first time that most young people are on their own, and a time when many have minimal financial or family (spouse, children, older parents) obligations and a time to really explore yourself. It is the one time of your life where your time is your own and when it is easiest to meet people from other places, cultures, philosophies and circumstances without hidden agendas. Friends you meet (for most people) will be the people who will be your friends for life. If you attend Michigan, some may be from close to home - 8% of students hail from the tri-state area. Many people regard their college years as the best years of their lives.
If you are uncertain about what to do, perhaps a compromise position would be to call NYU and request to be moved to RD. That would give you time to visit and make a more informed choice.
