UMich or PSU for undergrad?

Basically here's the simple rundown of me:
-PA resident
-Planned engineering major
-asian

PSU
Pros:
-good reputation of getting work plus alumni system
-reputable engineering program
-instate cost

Cons:
-huge population (imo)
-big party school (I don't like to drink; family likes alcohol, so I've had my tastes)
-apparently not much to do in surrounding "city"
-less diverse

U of M
Pros:
-good reputation of finding work post-grad
-supposedly "better" engineering program
-top choice school
-pretty diverse

Cons:
-expensive as an OSS

The price is my main issue that is causing hesitation from jumping right on board the UMich train. My family could probably pay 10k a year, so that leaves me with loans. My uncle, who is in the engineering world, say that loans will eventually be paid off since there is inflation occurring.

So what I'm asking you, among other people, is the extra cash worth it for UMich?

i'm at PSU and i'm planning on transferring to another school. I am actually a sophomore and i'm hoping i can withdraw from PSU this fall so that i would still have sophomore status and therefore, be eligible to apply for transfer to other schools.

I hate psu with the heat of a thousand suns...(AND I HAVE GREAT FRIENDS HERE!!!)....its a freakin' huge school and its VERY hard to get to know the professors becase there are so many students...unless you do research with them...plus they are cold and distant.....

i hate PSU for the same reasons you dont want to go there....the excessive partying and drinking, people just not caring about studing hard and the lack of diversity(i am black and there are THREE black girls in my chemical engineering classes and NO black guys)...there are literally no hispanics anywhere on campus and a FEW asians........I'm looking at your 'cons' for PSU and i think you should STEER CLEAR.......you're better off at umich...it is worth the cost!

I'd take PSU any day simply for cost reasons. PSU has a good reputation and virtually every engineering company of sufficient size would hire you.

lol The Cons for PSU would pretty much be the cons for UMich or any big school ;). Im at PSU right now and don know wat racnna has been doin wrong but all my professors are easy to get to know....all you have to do is goto Office Hours and show interest. The diversity can be improved and is....Ive found enuff of every race simply becuz the school is so big that the percentages are low, but the overall pop is so high. I am Black/White BTW.

Also UM's engineering campus is isolated from the main campus and downtown AA. The sizes are not that different.

I am a resident of PA too. I am considering Penn State for AeroEng. myself but I won't be going to Univ park, instead one of the smaller campuses - Mont Alto. It's a very small school, offers my engineering program, close to my home and generally a nice community. Problem is it may be too small and not very diverse (I'm an Asian too).

Penn state (all the schools) is great in academics but lacks in other important aspects imo. My parents think I should get the feel for this campus before deciding and I agree with them. I am very hesitant about going to univ. park though for the same reasons as racna and Jchenn. I will most likely study here for a semester or two then transfer to another school if I don't like it. (considering University at Buffalo)

I'm sort of hesitant about going to univ. park myself but I'm going to give mont alto a try.

Sorry if I was completely off your topic.

Hey, hkapoo. I'm like you (asian and majoring in AERSPeng), but I'm going to the University Park campus next year. I'm giving up 3500/yr for University at Buffalo to come to PSU with no scholarship/little aid. Money isn't really a factor for me anyway; the experience is!

Jchen402: If money is an issue, I'd suggest going to PSU. If not, then you should think about Umich.

Have you thought about University Of Pittsburgh? In-state, less than 1/2 size of PSU. Urban campus.
