I previously studied at University of Miami with chemistry major for one and half a year. (Although I was Chem Major, I picked the same courses as engineering students did) I applied to transfer to Chemical engineering at Fall 2013. So far, I have got offer from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, UIUC. I know both schools are good at Chemical engineering. I am struggling with choosing where I should go.

Most people suggested me to go to Umich because of its general reputation. However, I contacted some upperclassmen in Umich who are ChemE major and they told me ChemE in Umich is the hardest major in the college of engineering. Most students suffered from workload and they couldnt achieve high GPA.

Is UIUC in the same situation?

Can anybody give me some advice?

There is a 10k price difference. Nevertheless, Ann Arbor over Champaign-Urbana any day.

What is your basis for “any day”?

OP: The schools are so academically comparable that you should really pick the one you feel most comfortable at, since that would probably be the one you find the most success at. That is, of course, unless you really care how good the law or medicine programs are, in which case it would be Michigan “any day.”

@boneh3ad. When I look at the courses, I find that ChemE in UIUC is more about chemistry but that in Umich is more about engineering. It seems like ChemE in UIUC is little bit easier than that in Umich. Plus, Umich has higher requirements for students and more tough workload. Is that true??

Well I have never taken the ChemE courses from either school so I can’t really say with certainty. What I can say is that the two programs are likely almost identical given that they are nearly identical in all other branches of engineering for all practical purposes and are considered peers in the engineering world. If you are basing your assessment based on the title of courses, that is not likely to be fruitful. You would have to look at the syllabi.
