UMich or UIUC

UMich is the only school in the nation with an alumni club on the Moon.
The Apollo 15 all-UMich crew put the Michigan mementos on the Moon.
There are only two flag on the Moon, one is the US flag and the other is the UMich flag.
The fisrt American spacewalk, the Apollo mission, the space shuttle fight, the U-2, the SR-71 Blackbird are the examples of the impressive achivements of people from the UMich Aerospace Engineering Dept.

" Also I really do not think there so much difference in the overall rep of the schools that it will make any difference later in life. The main tangible benefit of UM is a better football team to watch on TV. Of course if you prefer Bball........"

i like the latter part.

most people in Asia dont know anything about UMichigan or UIUC (i lived there for 15 years), they only care about harvard, yale and stanford mostly. UIUC and UNC got a little famous in China last year due to NCAA basketball, Michigan is one of the better-known states in the eyes of Chinese, though. If I were in the situation, i would choose UMichigan. because:

1), a lot of international students go abroad to study (i meant, STUDY), not for fun. Most of the international students at UVa (where i go now) don;t party at all. I think the heavy drinking and the dominant greek life in UIUC could be overwhelming for the international student.

2) i think UMichigan has more famous alums than UIUC, that's something to boast.

that's basically it.

The only comparison between these two schools are their engineering and accounting programs on paper. Michigan has an academically stronger student body, a larger endowment, more geographical diversity, awesome school spirit, and better programs in most other areas. As an Illinois native currently attending the University of Michigan, I've been on both campuses numerous times and there's really no comparison between Champaign and Ann Arbor, AA is just so much more lively and spirited and interesting. Michigan really is the clear choice.

This is a good summary of my opinion.

Hmm... so most people agree with what I told him. What I said was that

Michigan has more recognition, especially internationally in the event that he leaves the US

Their engineering programs are basically at parity and Mich has the stronger overall program, so they have an edge for academics

The campus atmosphere at Mich is more suited to him (he's the quiet, hard-working type who likes to have fun... not at all the party animal)

Michigan has a stronger alumni base

Do people agree? is there anything else to say?

The campus atmosphere at Mich is more suited to him (he's the quiet, hard-working type who likes to have fun... not at all the party animal)

you're the only one who said that so far and im not so sure about that one. i'd like some backup for that cuz im interested about that aspect.

I think each school parties just as much as the other. The Michigan party scene is quite lively (which means that residence halls are nice and quiet on weekends). The only difference I really see is that UMich is in a much livlier town so there's more to do on the weekends than party, whereas there's really nothing to do in Champaign but get drunk or study.

what if one wants to do a psych major- which is better- UMich or UCIC?

UM is a little better but you are talking two top 5 programs so both are great.

Michigan by far.

Michigan has many more restaurants and a much nicer town. A non-partyer would prefer it. A partier would also prefer it lol!

Thank you all.
Would it be equally easy to switch majors- in freshman yrs -in either of the two schools?
