umich or unc (2 full rides)

Help! I am from the metro Detroit area and I have full rides at both unc and umich. Which should I choose? I intend to major in pharmacy by the way.

my personal preference would be to UNC...i visted UNCCH in the summer and absolutely loved it. Beautiful campus, amazing sports...great education..warmer weather...i applied to both of these schools and in your situation i wouldn't think twice. Michigan is slightly, very slightly, better in rank than UNC but it's not differentiable. I go UNC.

Without considering the major (since I don't know anything about Pharmacy) I would choose UNC too.

i'd choose UNC only if i was from Michigan for the mere reason of Change !!

Amyank, Michigan is more than "slightly better" than UNC. According to academe and corporate recruiters, Michigan's peers are Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern, Penn and UVa. UNC's peers are Emory, Vanderbilt, UIUC, Texas-Austin and Wisconsin-Madison. Michigan is not a lot better, but it is still generally considered the better of the two.

However, for Pharmacy, UNC is at least as good as Michigan, so for the OP, it does not matter which school she attends.

Jenny, have you visited UNC? Chapel Hill is gorgeous and fun. It is one of the few college towns that I believe compares nicely to Ann Arbor, only it is smaller. Congratulations on your acceptance there. It is TOUGH to get in for OOS applicants. I was accepted into four Ivy League Schools and several other selective universities, but my only rejections came from UNC.

This said, I would have an issue with attending a university that is not even the best in the neighborhood. Duke, which is less than 20 miles away, will always be the top dog in that neck of the woods.

I would recommend you visit UNC before deciding, but if you cannot, just go with your gut. You really cannot go wrong either way.

ok thanx u guys, keep the advice comin! actually alexandre, i am in a joint program with unc/duke called the robertson scholars program where I will actually be a student at both so I am in a way going to duke

Alexandre, where did you get this list of peers?

If you look at recruitment paterns and academic peer assessment scores, you would see the peer groups as I listed them.

pressure mounting from parents help

As a Robertson Scholar, UNC & Duke would be my recommendation. If your parents are putting pressure on you, then ask them for a twin sister.

Jenny, I recommend you go for fit. Michigan and UNC are both awesome. Duke is also great. Go to whichever school you think would make you happiest. You cannot go wrong.

Go to UNC

Whenever you talk about it, you just light up. That's how I was with Michigan, but unfortunately bc of cost I probably won't be able to attend. But If I had a full-ride, I'd go there in an instant. I've heard you say nothing but amazing things about UNC; you love it there Jenni! If you don't go now, you may never be able to. Michigan will always be a school you can root for, bc it's your hometown team. Why not have somewhere else to cheer about, too? Michigan is very well-known for its grad-programs, while UNC provides an excellent undergrad education. How about UNC undergrad, and Mich-grad? Robertson Scholar won't look too bad on that grad-school app!

So I'd say UNC. You won't regret it, and you'll have the time of your life. Of that, I have no doubt. And, you'll get to try something new, meet different people, and study at TWO amazing schools. You're going to do something amazing with your life, and I think for you, UNC gives you the best chance to do that.

And I say this as a huge UM fan.

PS...I've scouted out the squirrels, they're alright down on Tobacco Road!

Both Michigan and UNC would be fine for pharmacy and probably take preference for their own students. The programs have interchanging between top 5s, though Michigan sadly tanked to #5 while UNC rose to #2. I should have jumped ship and gone to UNC instead :) About 1/3 of my pharmacy class came from the Michigan undergrad.

this is my last cc post ever on the umich wall...tear. I have accepted unc's offer and I will be enrolling there in the fall. The decision was painful but I am excited about starting my journey there. Thank you all for the advice over the past couple of years.

Best of luck Jenny. I'm sure you've made the right decision for yourself. :-)

You are going to love Chapel Hill. It is an awesome college town. Drop by from time to time. You can be an honorary Wolverine! hehe!

jenny, if you're still reading here, I think this is great. If there's not cost difference and the quality is equal, I almost always vote for making an interesting geographic change. I went far from home for college and it was the making of me, I think. In one sense I hate to see a talented young person leave Michigan, but I think it could be great for you personally. Now enjoy the rest of the your senior year!

if you got the Morehead at Carolina TAKE IT!!!! especially if you want to go into pharmacy seeing as how you'd be in the research triangle (chapel hill, durham and cary/raleigh), plus who doesnt love north carolina?
