umich +other similar schools

Hey guys so I moved from a school in MI to India this year but I go to an American Int school here (same curriculum)
My gpa for 9th and 10th in MI was 3.9 UW and I took all English, Science, and Math honors courses

And then it dropped to 3.5 here but I take
AP Physics 1, AP BC Calc, AP Chem, AP Lang, AP Econ

Next year I’m taking AP: Stats, Psych, US Politics and Gov, Bio, and Physics C
ACT:32 (34,34,33,29)

Also I’m an MUN Chair since the 11th grade (have been to conferences internationally)
I’m president of a genetics club (4 years in a row) and it’s associated with U of M
I also have been part of a club that takes place at the university for all of high school
I’m president of a service based club that teaches english to local kids

I’ve won some regional and state awards in regional and state competitions
I’ve done a political campaign internship (US Senate) and I was an intern at a cancer biology lab at the university of Michigan.
I’ve also submitted a scientific paper for publication but it takes a year to process and I’m working on another one currently
I’m also going to do a service internship this summer in Indian slums

And my dad went to Ross so I’m a legacy

I’m super scared I won’t get in. What are my chances?
Also do I have a chance at any school that’s higher ranked or similar (suggestions would help)?
Thanks so much!

What is your overall unweighted GPA and the scale it is on (ex: 4.0 scale)?
Do you have any subject test/AP scores?
Which school/college at Michigan are you applying to?

My overall- i’m not sure bc they don’t put them together when you move, they just keep it separate. i think weighted overall it’s a 3.9. I’m applying to the LSA and i don’t have any scores yet but i don’t think they’ll be that great (i prob won’t submit them)

LSA isn’t hard to get in. You’re fine. I got into Ross through regular decision. So if you want to get into Ross, then do well your freshman year and be VERY involved in extracurriculars.

Thanks so much! Also I have a recommendation from a scientist/teacher at the LSA, will that help my application?

@renwa

That recommendation might help, especially if from a full-time lecturer/professor. The 3.5 GPA and 32 ACT are both below average (especially the GPA), however.

Thanks for responding!
their average act is 30 right? Also will they excuse a lower gpa if i took 6 ap courses in one year (also that’s not my cumulative, just one year’s). but with my overall stats what do you think my chances are?

and the professor is a lecturer and does research at the university. I interned with her for a summer

@renwa

My apologies, the ACT range for the middle 50% is 30-34 (2016 entering class). 32 puts you basically in the middle, maybe a bit on the lower side. Keep in mind schools like SMTD, Stamps, Nursing, and Kinesiology have lower average test scores for their students and bring down the averages a little bit (although those schools are significantly smaller than LSA and Engineering).

What do you think my chances overall though??

One thing you need to find out is if you are still qualified as an in-state student. That may have a big impact on your chance.

I’m out of state :frowning:

also i checked and LSA’s average ACT is 31

High 5 cuz i sucked at the science section of ACT too LOL… I think your EC makes you a great candidate for UMich/similar schools. GOOD LUCK!!! Make sure your essay is authentic and not generic

thanks so much!!! and yes the science section is super annoying ugh

Do you count as an international student? Are you in-state for admissions purposes, if not for financial/tuition? Are you considered as a domestic applicant who is out of state?

Also, where did you find the LSA stat?

no i’m counted as out of state
http://www.prepscholar.com/sat/s/colleges/University-of-Michigan-admission-requirements
this says the average act at umich is 30

I am adding an academic addendum bc the lower gpa was due to moving. And my gpa the next semester was higher. I figured if this first semester went well it would increase my chances. (thanks so much for all the responses btw, i wanna go to michigan so bad)

By the way, I think your ACT is a 33, not a 32 (32.5)

it’s a 32 composite but 33 superscored
