UMich over UVA

Did anyone choose Umich over UVA?

I am curious why? They are both excellent schools but what drew YOU closer to being a wolverine?

I chose UM over UVA, mainly for two reasons

 1. I live in Virginia(wayyy to many kids i know going there)
 2. UM has a much better Engineering Program(especially for Comp Sci/Comp Engineering)

that makes sense, I know how you feel about the state university, you would basically see everyone from High school all over again…

I would go to UMich because, Ann-Harbor seems like the BEST college town in the US. I’m from a small city (less than 1,000) so I’d feel somewhat more home there then at NYU, for example. Have a great day.

How long does it take to get from Inner Harbor to Ann “Harbor” by boat?

I chose UM over UVA because UM is a big 10 school, not nearly as preppy as UVA, and has a much better business school. I’m also from Virginia and I wouldn’t want to see everyone from my high school again >.<

I wish I could attend Michigan :frowning:

I can’t afford paying the out-of-state tuition. I would of chose Michigan over UVA because Michigan has a stronger engineering program, stronger industry connections, access to cutting edge research, and a strong sports culture.

To be quite honest, most of the UVA students I know are stuck up and quite full of themselves. For a school that is easily the weakest of the top five, you would imagine they would he more humble. That has been my experience anyways.

“For a school that is easily the weakest of the top five, you would imagine they would he more humble.”

…and yet USNWR says the are the second best public school in the US.

UVA weakest… by what standard? All of the top five U’s are amazing schools

Relatively weak in engineering and the hard sciences. UNC of course has no engineering and is also not very strong in the hard sciences. I would rate them about even. Cal and Michigan really don’t have any academic weaknesses among their course offerings.

UVA isn’t even that strong in the liberal arts. It has few top 15 programs - with its strongest being history, Spanish, and English.

Berkeley and Michigan are clearly better, with UCLA being slightly stronger and UNC is about the same.

Hell, one could argue Wisconsin is better.

All I know is that it really isn’t worth it to spend like 35k+ a year more for Michigan, even if you could afford it (this is coming from an incoming Umich freshman).

I don’t know Infinit, if money is not a factor, and you wish to major in Engineering or just want a different environment, spending more for Michigan is worth it. Overall, I agree that the two universities are roughly equal, with Michigan having a slight (insignificant) advantage overall. But in Engineering, the two are not in the same league.

I think he was talking about $35,000 more for Michigan vs UVA. I have to agree with him on that in saying that it isn’t worth it.

I was accepted into Michigan, UVA, and Virginia tech for engineering. Michigan was my first choice but the money was just not there. It was like Infinit said, it just isn’t worth it. Especially when one has an almost as good engineering school in-state.

My D chose UM LSA over Virginia. She was OOS to both and she thought that she would have been very happy at both, but UM came out ahead. 4 reasons: She got a partial acadamic scholarship to UM. She is in the Honors College at UM, she did not apply to UVa honors. She loves big-time football. The fourth reason was maybe the most amazing: She got a personal call from the President of UM, asking her if she had any questions and telling her that she thought my D would be a great fit at UM. My D has no idea why she was called (obviously the President can’t call 15,000 accepted students), but she was very impressed that she called her. It was not the deciding factor for her going to UM, but it was a factor.

“much better”…seriously? You might want to check your facts/figures:

yeah, because mendoza is clearly better than Wharton\Ross\Sloan\Haas

Michigan is NOT much better than UVA in business. Michigan IS much better than UVA in engineering.

rjk, I think it’d be more appropriate to change emphasis :

Michigan is not MUCH better than UVA in business. Michigan is MUCH better than UVA in engineering.

^^^Good point. Thanks for the tip. :-)
