UMich question

so im looking at the big blue for political science, psychology, or middle eastern studies. Is UM known for these schools? Does UMich have good programs in these depts.? any input would be AMAZING! thanks guys.

See if this thread answers your question:

Is Michigan weak in any way?

(Sorry..I don’t know how to post a link. The above is a thread title in the U. of Michigan forum which should be helpful to you. Good luck!)

I think the psychology department is usually ranked first in the country. In political science I believe we’re ranked #1 in American politics, pretty high in political methodology (maybe near first?), but not as good in IR/foreign stuff (we just lost a lot of professors in some subfield in that area). Not as sure about how highly the middle eastern studies department is considered, but my friend majored in it and didn’t seem to have any issues with it.

Michigan is definitely in the top five for both psych and poli sci, probably higher in both. My only caveat would be that these are hugely popular majors, so you’ll end up with very large classes especially at the intro level, and nothing like the intimacy and close relationships with faculty you’d develop in a smaller department like philosophy or classics. Don’t know much about Middle Eastern Studies.

The Middle Eastern Studies program is top-notch at Michigan. The state has one of the largest concentrations of people of Arab/Middle-Eastern descent. The international studies (by country) at the university is usually good.
