Hi guys, it's UMich Ross or UCSD Econ. I'm from CA, but thanks to some amazing scholarships, the financial difference won't make or break my choice (like $15-20k loans over four years for Mich).

I'm still waiting for pre-admit for Ross, but I'm willing to apply sophomore year if I don't get in. However, if I end up staying in LSA economics, how would it compare to UCSD econ?

I'd say I'm more of an introvert, willing to go out and meet people, but more happy with a closer group of friends. So the vastness of possibilities of Michigan's social life scares me a little. I'm not into how large Greek life is there and not to into watching football, basketball, etc like so many people are.

On the other hand, Ross is an amazing b-school, and would provide rare opportunities. Ann-Arbor is a great town, and I loved everyone I met at Umich.

I really liked both schools when I visited. For UCSD pros: weather, closeness to home, diversity, laid-back students but still intellectual environment. Can't think of any cons, except for the lack of a b-school, but obviously since UM is still in the running, there's something holding me back from committing to either of them.

Any advice is welcomed please!! Thanks guys.

godiva, you have been misinformed. Greek life at Michigan is not that significant. While it is true that at some universities, over a third of students are Greek, at Michigan, it is only 15%. The majority of Michigan students do not care much for the Greek life. Also, while many Michigan students love to attend football games, many don’t, and there is no bad blood between those that do and those that do not. Of course, if you are intolerant of football fans, then Michigan may not be good for you, but if you are willing to let it slide, you will be fine! Besides, like you, I too cared nothing for football when I was in high school, but Michigan changed all that. All it took was attending that first game live in the stadium. I remember the day. October 10, 1992. Michigan vs Michigan State. The good guys won 35-10. Life has never been the same since. ;)

Academically, Michigan and UCSD are both good, but Michigan has the clear advantage overall, in terms of resources, opportunities and reputation. I am not sure why this is even a question since you stated that finances are not a concern. Michigan and UCSD both have strong Econ departments, but in all other ways, Michigan offers a lot more, from a better overall academic experience to the option of getting a degree from one of the top business schools in the nation.

@Alexandre you’re right! After I visited, I was leaning towards Michigan. I know both colleges would offer me a great education, but it was the scariness of such a new and different environment that was holding me back.

I’m hoping for the pre-admit to solidify my choice in UM but as of now, I’m fairly sure I’ll commit to UM, thank you for the advice!

I hope you Go Blue godiva123!
