uMich Ross vs. UIUC College of Business Honors Program

Hi all,

For next year, I have narrowed my college choices down to UIUC, where I am in the college of business honors program, and Michigan (I am not in Ross yet, but likely could get in as a freshman).

Although Ross is significantly more expensive, it is much higher ranked.

Would being in the business honors program (Top 35-40 in a class of 700) narrow the gap between UIUC’s business school and Ross? (I am not terribly interested in accounting, which I know is strongest at UIUC). Or is Ross overall the stronger school?

Is there anyone that can speak to the strengths/weaknesses/value of Ross? Would being in the middle of the class at a theoretically stronger school make up for the missed opportunities of being in a special program at the top of the class at UIUC?

Thanks a ton!

Do you have an idea of what kind of career in business you would like? If it has anything to do with consulting or financial services (investment banking, sales and trading, private equity, hedge funds, venture capital, etc.) I would choose Ross. For other career tracks it may be a more difficult choice. Keep your personal family finances in account though, that can significantly make one school more attractive than the other.

I’m not in Ross, but I’m a preadmit, so I’m somewhat familiar with the school. What are you looking into doing (career wise), how sure are you about your future, and what kind of person are you interms of academics and extracurriculars?
