Hey guys, so I've been accepted to both UMich and MSU. And because my dad is a professor at MSU I would receive half off tuition. At MSU I would be in Lyman Briggs and in the Honors college, while at Michigan I am just in the regular LSA. Do you have an opinion on which is the better choice? Academically? What about socially, like what is being in Lyman Briggs like?

Thanks!

Lyman Briggs is pretty great. Lots of events and speakers for us Briggs kids, special classes, and most of you will live in Holmes, which is pretty cool. Considering that U of M is pretty expensive without any aid, I would pick MSU.

I’m in the exact same boat (with a modest amount of scholarships replacing the parent help anyway). I decided to do Lyman Briggs at MSU. I’m not really one for the party scene, so I can’t really attest to that, but academically, you’ll get more looks and opportunites at MSU than at U of M.

Agree with HiimCole, you won’t get more looks and opportunities at MSU than U of Mich. But if the cost is a lot lower and that makes a big difference to your family, go to MSU. If cost isn’t an issue, go to Michigan.

^ U of M and MSU have nearly identical costs (for Bauer, not the OP who is getting a tuition discount). I think what he meant was that you have more opportunities in Lyman Briggs than in U of M- which is likely true because of the residential college system.

Being at MSU with Lyman Briggs and Honors College opens up a lot of opportunities, especially if you distinguish yourself within your department as being one of the best. It’s probably easier to rise to the top like that at MSU than U of M, and you can challenge yourself just as much by taking harder classes, doing research, etc. I don’t think there is any disadvantage in choosing MSU, and it might even be better.
