This is my first time out here and I cannot beleive I am doing this at the 11th hour.
Undergrad (Eng.) divided between both schools. My son say Head at CMU but heart at UMich. My pocket book says if all others are equal then go with what is cheaper. Friends and Family members are divided. I also hear CMU graduates have better career opportunities as well as get better financial packages from prospective employers ( if this is true)

Would appreciate input.

Academically, both are roughly equal in Engineerint. If your son is interested in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, I would say go for CMU. If your son is interested in Electrical Engineering, both are roughly equal. For all other Engineering disciplines, I would recommend Michigan.

Socially, Michigan has a lot more to offer than CMU.

In terms of professional opportunities, both Engineering programs attract a HUGE list of recruiters from all industries (manufacturing, aerospace, management consulting, investment banking, pharmaceutical, biotech, infotech, etc...). And no, on average, CMU grads aren't paid more.
