could anyone give me a suggestion about which university i would better choose if i wanna major in EE

Are you a resident of either state? What sort of environment do you prefer?

well actually i am an international student from China, and i am not sure which one is better to suit me

Did you get into both?

just UIUC because i think if i can make up my mind right now,i will accept it and attend to the visa things

In some ways, they are similar. Both are very large, midwestern, public universities with top ranked Engineering programs. But that's where the similaries end.

In terms of setting, the University of Illinois is located in Urbana-Champaign, a small, relatively isolated, farming community. The closest international airport is Chicago, which is over 200 kilometers (150 miles) from Urbana Champaign.

The University of Michigan is located in Ann Arbor, a relatively wealthy, highly educated, high tech/biotech community. The closest international airport is Detroit, which is located 30 kilometers (20 miles) from Ann Arbor.

Academically, Illinois and Michigan are both excellent in Engineering and the Sciences. However, overall, Michigan is more well rounded, with top ranked departments in the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as top ranked professional schools, particularly Business, Law and Medicine.

Assuming you did not get a scholarship from either university and that the cost of attendence is roughly the same at both schools (including room & board, I think Michigan costs roughly $40,000/year and Illinois costs roughly $35,000/year), I would recommend Michigan.

well thanks
i guess i will have to wait for some time

OK. But is aid a factor for you?

i guess not
cuz i am an international student and am not eligible to apply for financial aid and i think the possibility of getting scolorship is also really little

i suggest waiting till you hear back from michigan. since they're ranked very close (number 4 UIUC and number 6 UMICH), consider location. sports? ask ppl about the surroundings there? does overall 'prestige' change your mind? etc. Alexandre's points are good to consider too.
