UMich vs. NYU for Economics?

Hey everybody! I am fortunate enough to have been accepted to both the University of Michigan and NYU, so I am having a tough decision choosing between the two. My question is, if I want to study economics, which school is better to go to? Would studying in Stern/CAS at NYU make a difference?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

In terms of the college experience, assuming you, like most undergrads, are seeking a well rounded undergraduate experience, Michigan beats NYU. As such, assuming cost is not a factor, I would recommend Michigan over NYU, regardless.

That being said, if you only care about career prospects, Ross is equal to Stern for jobs in Finance but slightly better for jobs in industry and in consulting. However, Stern would be better than LSA. LSA and NYU CAS would be about even in this regard.

For Economics, Michigan and NYU are peers.

I am a little confused because it sounds like you were admitted in CAS, not Stern. If that is the case, how is Stern an option? I thought students could not transfer into Stern once at NYU.

Graduate Econ at NYU is ranked #11, vs Michigan #13. (USNWR)

But, I’m assuming you’re a prospective undergrad. At the undergraduate level they’re also ranked quite similarly.

Prestige and student body strength between the two schools is fairly comparable. Michigan is the more traditional college experience, whereas NYU is more the “student in the city” college experience. Both are great options, just depends on what type of environment you see yourself in.

Overal undergraduate rankings (USNWR)
Michigan #29, NYU #32
Personally I think both are somewhat underrated on USNWR.

Anyways,
Good luck!
