UMich vs Penn State Honors (Schreyers)

Basically go all out and tell me all the reasons why I should pick UMich over Penn State Honors for engineering...I hope to get into both programs and they are my top two.

Also, if you think that I should pick Penn State over UMich tell me that too!

is this a joke? O.o

why would you pick penn state? you’re not even in state

first off, penn state’s engineering program is ranked #17…second of all their honors programs is one of the tops in the country and it is quite difficult to get into…probably harder to get into than umich

You should just go to Penn St.

why do u say that?

It doesn’t really matter how hard it is to get into the Honors program at Penn st. You want to go to the program that opens up the most opportunities for your money. Penn State is a good school, but Umich would probably open up more doors. Of course fit should be a factor, but if you can imagine yourself having a good time at both schools, then Umich seems like the better choice. This is not even taking account that Umich has a better Engineering program.

The main reason you should go to Penn is if it’s significantly cheaper.

Someone from my town also picked PSU over UM. Still leaves me confused.

“first off, penn state’s engineering program is ranked #17…second of all their honors programs is one of the tops in the country and it is quite difficult to get into…probably harder to get into than umich”

Just go to Penn State. It’s obvious that’s where you want to be. However, you are not going to convince anyone in this forum that PSU would be a better choice than Michigan all things equal.

its not even close to true that penn state is definitely where i want to go…i was just saying that because i do think the two are worth considering

Both are great schools! Schreyer is indeed one of the best honors colleges in the entire country. I have heard by many that it is considered on a par with some ivies. Michigan’s engineering program is also spectacular according to lots of my friends! I am just a student giving my opinion, not a professional, however. The choice is ultimately YOURS! Give both visits, if you can, and make the decision for yourself. Don’t listen to others saying Penn State is a bad choice; both will give you an excellent education.

thank you very much

i really appreciate u being open nd not afraid to go against the rest of the michigan haters

Just apply to both and see where you get in and which gives you the best aid. If costs are similar, I would choose Michigan, but Penn State honors is good too.

Note: You should’ve posted this in the College Search and Selection forum if you wanted a more unbiased opinion.

What kind of engineering?

Michigan engineering does not offer an undergraduate honors program as it is not necessary … unless you need a lot of hand holding.

It does offer an Engineering Global Leadership Honors Program together with the Ross School of Business. It’s a 5-year bachelor/master’s program ([Michigan Engineering | EGL Home](http://www.engin.umich.edu/egl/index.html)).

In general, Michigan engineering has better programs across the board, better facilities, more established faculties, better research opportunities, alumni network and industrial connections.

The OP posted on the PennState forum too, so he will get biased opinions on both sides 8^).

Most people believe AA is one of the top college towns in the country. Other than bars, State College doesn’t have much.

what does “honors” engineering or any honors college do again?

“what does “honors” engineering or any honors college do again?”

The honors college at Penn State not only gives a small scholarship to all honors scholars, but it also gives the honors students an opportunity to meet personally with top-rated professors and faculty and really build a relationship with them, also being in the honors college allows for students to apply to special scholarships, lastly being in the honors college allows students to take special classes

“it also gives the honors students an opportunity to meet personally with top-rated professors and faculty”

Number of faculty members in the National Academy of Engineering
