Hi everyone!

I'm a student accepted into the engineering departments of the University of Michigan and University of Toronto where I plan on studying computer engineering. I've looked at a couple of threads about the relative advantages and disadvantages of both schools but I want to know more about the comparison of career opportunities of the schools.

Is is true that UMich has an edge in terms of career opportunities at companies such as Google, Intel and others from Silicon Valley?

Please also take into consideration that I will be paying resident tuition for U of T whilst I'll probably be paying full for UMich.

Thanks.

Yes, Michigan does offer better career options in the US in general, particularly at major companies such as Google (Larry Page, co-founder and current CEO, is an alum), Microsoft and IBM, all of which recruit heavily at Michigan.

However, the cost difference is HUGE. Toronto residents pay like $10,000/year while Michigan will cost you $50,000/year. That’s like $150,000 more to attend Michigan over four years. That is not worth it. I would go to Toronto, a top university in its own right, and save the money.

FWIW – I am totally biased on this one – you’re talking more than double the money for a reasonably comparable education. In the end, you’ll make your own opportunities. I would not pass up resident tuition for U of T in your shoes unless I really had money to burn. And I am saying that as the parent of a very very happy Wolverine (Who used to live in Toronto and loves and misses the city…)

(cross posted with Alexander…)

I love Toronto. If it costs that much less to attend, by all means go there!
