Umich vs. Tulane vs. FSU for Psychology

The perceived difference in prestige wont matter at all for a career in school psychology. Note in some places the public schools want a teaching certification for that as well.

There are lots of people from the northeast at Tulane. There are also lots of social life options outside of the Greek system. But I would definitely check with the university about the availability of on-campus housing.

So Michigan is $50k, Tulane is $35k, and FSU is unknown, but no more than $28k. The way you’ve been talking, I thought Tulane and Florida State were the same price, or at least within $1-2k of each other. They’re not. It’s a $14k difference. More than half the worth of a new car. School psych is not known for its extremely high salaries. Also, you may end up getting more aid (including scholarships) at FSU. Depending on your stats, they may offer you an OOS waiver as well.

When it’s a matter of taking out loans, I believe in going for the best price at a good school. FSU is a good school, and it’s offering you the best price. That’s where I would be headed.

FSU doesn’t give merit aid including oos wavier to transfer students sadly. The only merit option is for TCC transfers so any additional aid would be need based. My need on the fsu need page is more than the billed COA so I’m hopeful I’ll get something if that’s the case I’ll go to fsu because then it would be cheaper for me to go there than my own in state school (its actually already the same price).

Fsu doesn’t give merit aid to transfers unless you come from tcc. I’d be relaying on need based. My parents are worried about me moving to a new region of the country on my own and don’t want me living on my own. Even tho I disagree with the logic I decided it wasn’t worth the fight

Does your current LAC meet full need? Why didn’t you apply to any meet full need transfer schools?

The situation was complicated financially at my old school. They basically removed three of my household members because I wasn’t biologically related to them and doubled my EFC my sophomore year and I was forced to leave. I worried about the css profile because it’s often used to make your EFC whatever they want it to be ESPECIALLY at need met schools (which my old lac was one of them). Also most need met schools are LACs and I have zero interest in going to one of those.

They also tend to have abysmal transfer acceptance rates. I looked into going to another NESCAC but all the transfer acceptance rates were Below 10%. I’ve done well and have gotten into some low AR and high average stats schools but that’s a whole other ball game

I’m confused about why you applied to Michigan - if you have aid needs, then you should have applied to schools that meet need (for transfers). Or cheap schools - which FSU is relative to others.

Can you do the 4/1 at Tulane as a transfer? I don’t know.

I could do the 4/1 at Tulane it starts your senior year. And Michigan was my “reach” school I never thought I was going to get in so I wasn’t super worried about how much it was going to come in as because I never thought I’d get accepted in the first place. My parents wanted me to try for one reach school so I did.

Well I wish you applied to UNC or UVA - they’re the two publics that meet need - so Michigan was never going to be viable. It’s more a note for people reading - applying to a school you 100% can’t afford is just a waste of time and money. Not sure if UNC/UVA meet for transfers but.

Good luck whatever you decide.

But if you want to save $$, then the 4/1 sounds good if it can get you the final outcome you want.

PS - Tulane is a reach for all

Thank you for your feedback. I look into UNC and uva but wasn’t interested. They don’t meet need for oos transfers so there wasn’t a point because I strongly preferred umich to both and umich was significantly better for my major. Plus oos UNC and UVA are very hard admits so it would’ve been a bigger waste of money because I didn’t have much of a shot at getting in. Also I don’t know if it was a note for those reading or a comment to me but I did get accepted to Tulane with merit money. Maybe I would’ve had a shot at uva or UNC but too late now lol

I actually looked it up again I take it back uva and UNC do meet need for transfer students. But again I wasn’t interested in either school and as an OOS applicant It would’ve pretty much been a auto reject anyway as both schools discriminate heavily against oos students especially because of transfer agreements with in state cc. I believe that oos transfer acceptance rates are lower for transfer than freshman. So UVA and UNC are not viable options for transfer students unless you are a Virginia or North Carolina resident.

All New Orleanians consider uptown absolutely in the city.

Yes, but those going to school in New Orleans are not New Orleanians.

I’ve been to Tulane…it’s not what people (new to city) would consider in the city…

I think what you may be trying to communicate is that Tulane’s Uptown (mainly undergraduate) campus is not in downtown New Orleans. But Uptown New Orleans is definitely still considered part of the city. It’s not a suburb…it’s a neighborhood.

Just a note…Tulane also has a presence downtown with its graduate and professional health sciences schools. That downtown footprint will be expanding significantly as it invests in its Innovation Institute and the redevelopment of Charity Hospital among other projects.
