UMich vs UCLA vs UCSD for engineering

Ok, so here's my dilemma...

I've been accepted into the engineering schools at UMich, UCLA and UCSD. I know that UMich's engineering program is ranked higher than the other two schools, but I've been living in a tropical climate all my life, and I don't think I will enjoy the Ann Arbor weather. Everyone I've spoken to tells me that the weather in Michigan will make life depressing (since I will rarely be able to go outside), and that the quality of life in California will generally be much better.

Is this true? And is the difference in rankings significant enough to choose UMich over UCLA and UCSD? Will engineers from Michigan have better research opportunities and job recruitments than engineers from UCLA? Lastly, what is the culture like at UMich as opposed to UCLA and UCSD?

Thanks in advance!

At Michigan, when it is cold, students don’t go out very often. We prefer spending time between the sheets…preferrably with mixed company.

Seriously, the quality of life on campus at Michigan is just as good as the ones at UCLA or UCSD. I grew up in Abu Dhabi, where the typical sumer’s day temperature is 50 degrees celcius with 99% humidity and the cold winter night seldom drops below 15 degrees celcius, and I had no trouble adjusting to Michigan winters. In fact, it was a welcome change. Students at Michigan are just as active and happy as UCLA and UCSD students.

If you need sunshine to be happy, go for the UCs. If weather does not affect your mood, go for Michigan. Engineering at Michigan is sick!
