UMich VS UIUC (Computer Science)

I was accepted into UMich last December and UIUC today.

At UMich, I'm currently in LSA, will likely do the CS and Econ programs within it. Also, I'm out of OOS so tuition is a bit hefty.

At UIUC, I'm in the Engineering school, will likely do CS + minor in Technology and Management. I'm in-state so tuition is pretty generous.

Career wise, I look to head into consulting at MBB and then venture in PE after I get an MBA. What would be your recommendations?

I would go with University of Michigan- Ann Arbor. Though you say your a instate student for UIUC, so it's something to consider for financial reasons.

You live in Illinois, save your money and head to UIUC...Michigan is especially not worth it if you would be doing LSA here vs. Engineering at U of I.

Hey Jaris-congratulations! My son (borrowed his screen name for this post) was just accepted to the CS program at UIUC yesterday too. We live in Ann Arbor, and he was deferred from UM. All the rankings show UIUC's engineering to be better than UM. Combine that with in state tuition and the fact that you're likely looking at grad school, and I think there is no decision to be made. Stay with UIUC. Maybe my son will see you there provided we can make it work financially.

Great post :)

I've gotten in UMich college of Engineering and U of Illinois Engineering (CS).

I'm OOS, and U of Illinois works out 6K cheaper. But for some reason I'm more inclined toward UMich, probably because it's more selective and I really like the school atmosphere...

I guess in the end it'll come down to aid... But my parents make over 150K, so do I stand any chance for aid at all?

Really confused- (UMich eng vs. UIUC eng)...any ideas?

dsmo what do you mean Michigan isn't worth it if your doing LSA here?

I know when I send a application to Michigan ( future doctor) I will most likely be signing up for LSA.

dsmo, but if I was doing CS in LSA at UMich wouldn't I have access to everything that a CoE CS major at UMich has access to?

mor99. Since you are OOS to both schools, 24k total additonal cost over four years is not a big enough reason financially in my opinion not to go to the school that you really want to. Go to Michigan. A2 is a better town to live in for four years than U-C and engineering programs are pretty comparable. (slight overall edge to Illinois)

Jaris. Unless you dislike UIUC that much, I see no advantage to paying a high OOS tuition to attend a comparable school.

Although Michigan is a better overall school and is a bit more selective, Illinois is still a very good school and has a slightly better engineering school, and as everyone else has stated you are in-state at UIUC. In these economic times, you should go with UIUC, it's a better overall financial decision and you will get a good education at UIUC as well, especially for engineering.

Only thing that worries me is job placement - I heard that UMich is pretty good for consulting at McKinsey and Bain, but what about UIUC?

UIUC Engineering is not better than Michigan. It is ranked 2-3 spots higher because it is larger, not better. Only Cal, Caltech, MIT and Stanford are better than Michigan in Engineering. CMU, Cornell, Georgia Tech, Michigan and UIUC are peers in Engineering.

This said, in CS, UIUC is indeed better than Michigan, albeit marginally. That should not be a deciding factor. What should be a deciding factor is cost. UIUC will probably cost $80,000 less than Michigan over 4 years. Unless the OP's folks are very wealthy, UIUC is a much more sensible choice. If the OP's parents can afford Michigan without too much burden, then I recommend he/she go for fit.

Thanks rjkofnovi. I find it funny that I know a couple people who got into UIUC engineering but not into UMich engineering, but UIUC is ranked higher!

But another point is though UMich Eng is 7 and UIUC 4, there's a 3-way tie for 4th so the difference is not really as much as it seems.

The overall quality of an institution doesn't have nearly as much to do with selectivity as a lot of people on this forum would like to believe.

go illini!

It's harder to get into Michigan OOS than Illiinois mor99 so that's not surprising at all. Illinois engineering is a larger school and therefore has more places for applicants. MIchigan is the overall better university if you decide to leave engineering and major in something else. Since you are OOS for both schools and have to pay a premium to attend either one, I'd still go with the school that I liked the better of the two. That's your choice to make. Best of luck to you.

Actually Novi, the OP is a resident of Illinois, so the cost of attending Michigan is significantly higher.

I realize that Alexandre. Mor99, the poster I was leaving this message for, is not IS for either school.

UIUC is now 5th and Michigan is in the teens (dropped since 2009) in both u-grad and grad CS rankings on US News. Food for thought ;)

I am not sure I understand the point of reviving a thread that is over 5 years old. At the undergraduate level, the difference between #5 and #13 is negligible. Michigan CS alums are as well represented at major Silicon Valley tech firms as UIUC CS alums. Like I said in an earlier (much earlier!) post on this thread, this sort of insignificant detail should not be a determining factor. Cost of attendance, if it is indeed a concern, should be the driving factor in this case. If cost of attendance is not a concern, then I would recommend Michigan over UIUC because it is a better university overall, and provides undergraduate students with a better overall experience.
