Hey everyone,
I'm a michigan resident who was accepted to UIUC's ECE program but deferred from UMich. I'm fairly confident that i'll get into UMich regular decision and am trying to choose between these two schools. Which of these schools do big tech companies(Apple,Google,Microsoft, etc) recruit more out of? Would you say that the caliber of students at the engineering schools are the same? If I get into UMich should i definitely chose it over UIUC, or should i visit and then decide?

Michigan and Illinois are both top Engineering schools. If you get accepted to Michigan, I’d say that’s where you should go from a financing perspective. Academically, they are roughly equivalent. Top corporations visit both institutions regularly. As for determining personal fit, nothing beats an in-person campus visit.

I agree that the final cost would be your main consideration. Both are great schools, and both are very expensive for oos students. Particularly, since you are deferred from UMich, your chance for large merit aid is not very high. The admission stat for both engineering schools are about the same. Other than the cost, the main difference is you are accepted into ECE at UIUC directly but CoE first year at UMich. Since you are accepted to UIUC as oos, you are indeed very likely to be accepted by UMich CoE as in state. Even if you don’t need any financial aid, it may not worth to spend the extra money to go to UIUC. We visited UIUC last Summer and we live in town right next to UMich. The two campus are a kind of similar in many aspects.

Thanks for the advice, I’m really hoping to get into Michigan as it has been my dream school for a long time. I guess i’ll know in about a about month and a half or sooner(hopefully sooner).

Good luck to you and you may be my D’s classmate this Fall. ;)

waitlisted at umich will attend uiuc this fall
