UMich vs. UIUC (for EE/Physics)

Which univ is more competitive, and which one is better at both the EE and Physics program. I noticed that UIUC is ranked higher in both categories, but Ive heard that ranking doesnt really matter, and UMich is also highly regarded outside the field of engineering and science. Any thoughts?

ranking might not matter in a feel-good sort of way but try telling that to your future recruiters. both schools are good but if you are speaking in terms of EE "prestige" UIUC is more impressive. did you get into both schools?

They are basically the same in terms of ranking and reputation. No one will put down either degree. Make your selection based on things like campus enviroment, location, etc.

chenuine - i am asking this because i am interested in applying for transfer, and i am trying to narrow down my list

I heard that UIUC sometimes has a very large class size, making it hard to even get into the class... is this true? Is there such a problem like this at UMich too?

Cheniune, how is Illinois more impressive than Michigan in Engineering? In the last decade and a half of following rankings closely, UIUC has always been ranked between #3 and #6 and Michigan between #4 and #8. Being ranked one or two spots above does not make UIUC more impressive. In my 4 years as a recruiter of Engineers in the US, I have almost never met anybody who differentiates between UIUC and Michigan when it comes to Engineering.

UIUC has the slightly better EE and Physics programs, but Michigan is slightly better known overall. In any case, these differences are basically negligible, so you should make your choice based on location, environment, financial aid, etc.
