UMich vs. UIUC

Hello,

I applied for engineering to both schools and for UMich, I got accepted but at UIUC, I got in with my second major(LSA Chem, James Scholar) but I could still switch. I live in IL. I got 7,000 dollars in Financial Aid from Michigan and none from UIUC. My parents came afford both schools, so costs don’t matter as much as other aspects. As I’m torn between these, could anyone give any information that may sway me? Any fun facts, benefits(academic, social, prestige), traditions would help. Thank you very much!

If your parents are willing to pay the costs, I would recommend Michigan. Ann Arbor is a way better place to spend four years.

Thanks! It was a beautiful setting. I haven’t been to Champaign though.

The other concern is the economy in the state of Illinois and the relatively small size of the endowment at UIUC to handle cutbacks.

UIUC Chemistry is actually pretty strong. Chemical Engineering was actually spun off from it and remains in LAS (LSA is for UMich). The engineering campus is beautiful there. However, if engineering is your primary interest, you should consider UMich instead of seeking for transfer the next year. Some majors at UIUC are very difficult to enter while at UMich you have pretty much the freedom to pick your major in most cases.

@rjkofnovi‌ Thank you for notifying me of this. I had no idea this was happening.

@billcsho‌ Yes, I was scanning through UIUC’s pages and changing majors seems to be a little complicated.

Bump.

Bump.

My son was accepted EA to engineering at U of Michigan and in business at UIUC. He hasn’t made his decision yet, BUT in my opinion the difference in the cost of attendance for the 2 schools is too large to ignore. Like your parents we can afford the OOS tuition, but I question whether it makes sense to spend that much on an undergraduate degree. We’ll see what my son thinks/feels over the next couple of weeks.

And per your request, here you go: http://ccb.lis.illinois.edu/Projects/storytelling/alesak/uiuclegends.htm

@88jm19‌ Wow, thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for! And good luck to you guys!

Bump. Anyone, please?

If you are instate for UIUC and oos for UM, I imagine the cost difference would be substantial. Even if your parents can afford it, the engineering programs at both schools are similar enough that I can’t really imagine paying that large of a premium to go to UM.

Thank you. I haven’t been accepted into UIUC engineering and from what I read online, it seems to be difficult to change majors to engineering…I don’t know if I will be admitted…as for UM, I’m already in.
