I’m really interested in these two schools, specifically for the academics and campus/community. I feel as if I have decent scores, etc. to be a match for UM and UIUC. With that said, I was wondering

Which schools are similar to these two?

What are the differences between them?

OOS tuition at UI/UC is less than OOS at Michigan. If your stats are good, it is not hard to get a merit-based reduction at Illinois. Michigan is closer to a large city, and Ann Arbor itself is probably livelier than Urbana/Champaign. If you are interested in engineering, Illinois is ranked higher. Outside of engineering, Michigan has a bigger reputation.

loslobos, I'd say the differences among the schools you listed can be considerable. Minnesota is an urban campus, Illinois is in a cornfield, Wisconsin is in a small city...

midmo UIUC's engineering is not more respected than UMich, the are equally amazing (It just seems more respected because it is top program at UIUC while UMich's engineering does not stand out as much from the rest of the school).

Valawe, they are essentially tied in USNWR (UI 4th, MI 6th), so I stand corrected. I should have remembered, since my son applied to, and was accepted to, both of them. (But is going elsewhere).

And I agree that Mich is overall stronger, so engr. stands out more at U of I.

Thanks for the replies. I loved UIUC when I visited, but I think UMich would be a better fit.

I understand that in terms of engineering, the two are quite similar, but I'm guessing that Ross is significantly better than UIUC's COB. Is that right?

^^ Ross is one of the premier business schools in the country, however UIUC is also excellent.

businessweek's rankings are among the most reliable; they put UMich at 6 and UIUC at 22, with UMich getting an A+ for job placement, and UIUC an A (job placement is what really matters here).

Michigan has a $5,000 advantage in average starting salary (about 10%) though UIUC's average salary still tops the likes of Cornell, IU, UNC, BYU... well... i'll just let you read for yourself:
