I am a high school senior deciding between University of Michigan and University of Maryland. I plan to major in engineering. I am debating between Biomedical, Mechanical, and Aerospace. University of Michigan seems to clearly be the better school academically but is it worth the tuition. I have the opportunity for instate tuition at UMD so to go to UMI would be approx 2.5 times as expensive. The reason I am hesitating for UMI is mostly the cost what i dont want to happen is for me to waste that much money and come out with about the same as UMD.

UMD. Michigan is a great school but not worth 2.5 times the cost. UMD is highly-ranked for engineering.

Well umd is actually ranked pretty high for it’s engineering program but let me tell you now, it doesn’t have biomedical engineering, it has bioengineering.

I am aware they dont offer biomed. If i do got to maryland I plan to major aero or mech since they are the better programs. Also ive heard nasty things about the bioengineering Since I plan to go to grad school. My only regret is I rly loved michigan area feel and everything.

“My only regret is I rly loved michigan area feel and everything.”

One of the many reasons why Michigan can get top dollar for OOS students.

“UMI would be approx 2.5 times as expensive”

UMD is the hands-down winner on this one.

But since you were interested in biomed, and you are in-state for MD, what about UM-BC?

“UMD is the hands-down winner on this one.”

Hands down? Hardly. The ONLY advantage I can see here is the cost. Other than that, it’s clearly Michigan. That said, unless you can easily afford U-M, Umd would be the logical choice.

UMD is the logical choice price choice. UMich is better in almost every other regard i felt. I feel that UMich is far more expensive and am questioning is it worth it. Its not affording it its more a question if i want to save money for higher education(grad school, etc)

you need to go to the place you would enjoy for 4 years. money isn’t comparable to happiness. I’m also thinking about U of M, and though it will cost alot, I loved it so much. That’s more important than money, which can be paid back. The experience can’t be made up for.

Perhaps I was mistaken, but I understood the OP to be asking about ROI. In which case, UMD is hands-down. Were money not a question that the OP had raised, or had the OP asked “If money is not an issue, which is better?” Then the answer would be different.

Money is not the issue. My family says they can make it work without taking loans. Granted it wouldnt be as easy as paying for UMDs costs. I dont want to be too much of a financial hardship without knowing the benefits of UMich are worth the extra 25k or so a year. Also saving money for grad school is a thing my family is trying to keep in mind. Ive heard various things about affording grad school ranging from its cheaper overall because of stipends and more fed aid. Ive also heard that if you go to grad school it really doesn’t matter where you go for undergrad

Michigan is worth the extra $25k or so a year in this case if your parents can afford it without taking out any loans. It’s the better school, has the stronger reputation in your chosen field and most importantly you like it more. If it doesn’t dampen your prospects for financing grad school, I would choose Michigan. Otherwise, I’m sure you can excel and find your niche at UMD.

Where you go to grad school is more important than where you do your undergrad.

If you go to Law School or Med School or pursue any other professional type degree such as an M. Eng. or M.S.W. you will almost certainly have to pay for it.

If you go to grad school for a Ph.D. in an STEM field you will almost certainly receive full support. Some M.S. programs have full or partial support. If you pursue a Ph.D. in a non-STEM field, you will probably have good support as well, but for an M.A. it is almost certain that you won’t.

Thanks for all your advice everybody. I suppose Ill make the decision withing the next week

We live in Maryland and my older son had two close friends with the in-state at Maryland vs OOS at Michigan dilemma. Both of the friends wanted to go to Michigan - to experience something different and because they perceived that Michigan was the more prestigious school. In the end - one went to Michigan and one went to Maryland. They are both having great experiences and doing well. Of course, the one who went to Maryland is spending about $100,000 less over the course of 4 years - which basically pays for grad school.

So - if money is no object and your family can spend an extra $100,000 without blinking - go to Michigan. But I think for most students - Maryland would be the sensible choice.

Maryland - Michigan is too much $$$

Thanks for all the advice. Im reasonably sure I will be commiting to UMD unless I recieve a real good reason otherwise. UMich is wonderful and I love it but not enough to justify 2.5 times the cost. Mabye I can go there for grad school

Sounds like you have a plan that you are happy with! Congratulations!

Good thinking nick334433. Best of luck to you at Maryland. :-)

My S faced similar dilemma this time last year (UMD gave him $12/yr vs. full price @ UMich), and I’m pleased to report that he’s happily finishing his Freshman year at Maryland. Aside from the price difference, he liked the warmer weather & compact nature of Maryland’s campus (Eng. school @ UMich is a bus ride away from the main campus). He is in the Honors College & majoring in Aerospace E. Have you read this recent ranking of Maryland Engineering? [U.S.
