UMich vs UNC Chapel Hill

Hi. I made class of 2023 for both schools, which I equally like. Thus, I would appreciate help making decision between the two.

  • UNC Full Ride (instate& scholarship/ honors college)
  • UMich 25k (OOS, no news on scholarship yet/waiting for honors college decision)

Intended Major: Neuroscience
I prefer warmer weather, so slightly leaning toward UNC for the moment, but I really loved the campus and student vibe at Umich when I visited through summer program.

If your OOS cost at UMich is $25k/year that implies that your family income is less than $90k with asset less than $50k. Are your parents willing/able to pay the $25k/year?

Is the full ride @ UNC including room and board?

@Eeyore123 yes, UNC’s fees to attend are all covered(tuition + room&board). For Umich, I am actually confused about that part that “$90k with asset less than $50k” on their website. I thought there would be more financial aid but 25K is way over my EFC from FAFSA. Meanwhile, our savings are over 50k, so I am guessing my FA offer didn’t meet 100% of my need because of that. I am still gathering some outside scholarships in the moment and my parents would be able to pay at least 15k with their savings.

UMich has its own formula to determine need. I don’t know if they do, but one difference can be home equity.

I think UNC is a clear winner.

Don’t you have like 20+ other schools you are waiting on responses?

@Eeyore123 very good point! Well, the fact that the 20ish other colleges are literally top 20 colleges. So I am not expecting any positive news. I have fairly low confidence to hear good news from these in March, so I’m trying to be realistic.

Congratulations! Two great options . . . and two great places to live. Two of my favorite flagship college towns. It sounds like UNC on cost and weather. Good luck!
