umich vs USC computer science engineering

Which would you choose

Considering location, academics, Jobs after graduation and pretty much everything else

If I choose USC I will prob stay in Cali post graduation, and if I choose Mich I will prob live in the NE or new York area

Definitely CS major

I am leaning towards USC because its in Cali, but I’m not quite sure how the two programs compare academically.

I visited both schools and USC campus has the edge, but I still like umich

( this is all assuming I get into USC BTW)

You should go to USC in your case. You like the campus better and it appears you want to be in California. Personally, I do not care much for the LA basin in general and I don’t care at all for the location of USC in particular. To each his own. For academics Michigan has the edge, but not enough to if you like USC more. If you don’t get into USC, then Michigan is a great university and you will end up loving it. Congrats on being accepted!

Why do you feel you have to live in the NE or NY area if you graduate from Michigan? A Michigan degree travels very well. That is one of the strengths of graduating from Michigan. It is held in pretty high regard throughout the country and the world.

Well I’d only live on those 3 places probably, and I think job opportunities in Cali from USC would be better

^^^^^A Michigan degree travels well in California, particularly NorCal. USC is, of course, very strong in LA.

While I’m not a big believer in rankings for CS, I will note that ARWU rates USC #11 in CS, and Michigan #16.

Also, in its “Best Global Universities for Computer Science”, US News has USC at #12, and Michigan at #34.

It is a lot easier to get into Michigan. It’s admit rate is 33.3%, while USC’s admit rate is 19.8% (according to US News). I don’t know what your grades and scores are like, but if you consider USC to be a match or reach, you can probably view Michigan as a safety.

And LA’s a lot more interesting than Detroit.

BTW - the fact that I grew up in Columbus has nothing to do with my opinions on Meatchicken, er, Michigan.

have you run the net price calculators at each school and determined whether you can afford either school and which is more expensive?

Graduate rankings for CS at USNWR:

Michigan #13

USC #20

tOSU #34

The UM admit rate for OOS is much, much lower (think low 10’s%). UM is not a safety for anyone OOS any longer.

I’m already into Umich CoE so getting in isn’t the problem anymore haha

See, Michigan is easy to get into!!

^ USC* used to be very easy to get into.

*University of Second Choice
*University of Scholastic Compromise
*University of Special Connections
*University of Spoiled Children

^^ Ha. I went there in the late 80’s, so that probably proves your point.

At the time, I remember someone from USC administration telling me that basically, if you were in the top half of your graduating class, you’d get into USC.
