UMich vs UT for engineering

S is almost decided to attend UMich, but he wouldn't mind attending UT and there is still time for a few last minute considerations.

S is getting in-state tuition for UT Austin and generous financial aid from UMich (OOS) and so out of pocket expenses are very similar for both schools. Also, both schools admitted him to his first choice major. He loves both schools, although he is swaying a little towards UMich. My only concern is, UMich financial aid may or may not be as generous the coming years whereas UT's in-state offer is going to stay. Considering these, which one you think will be a better option for him? Pros and Cons?

Thanks for helping us make the decision.

My parents and I had the same concern.
Just go to Michigan.
My mom’s friends have regretted sending their kids to UT instead of Michigan.
If you go to Michigan, you’ll have chances to work up north rather than staying stuck in Texas.

^^That’s hardly true. The University of Texas is known internationally. The OP’s son would not be “stuck” in Texas.

The UMich is so much better for engineering, and I would actually say UMich is more internationally known than UT…

^^I never said anything about UT being better or more well-known. I was merely pointing out that UT is not some second-rate university like thechineseman made it seem. Run along…

Arutha, I think the main question here that you’re asking is whether he’ll get the same amount of financial aid in future years, not whether he should pick UT or UMich. I would recommend creating a new thread with the words “Financial Aid” in the title to attract people who otherwise wouldn’t bother looking at this thread, asking about their experience with financial aid changing from year to year.

I think you raise a good point. Study the scholarship/financial aids package carefully to see if it is renewable for 4 years. If it is, all you have to do is to maintain a good GPA for renewal.

Personally I will pick Michigan, not because of the quality of the respective engineering programs (the difference is minimal), but because it is always good to go away to a different environment for college.

After considering several factors, S picked UMich. Go Blue!!
