"I’m going to have to disagree with that. I live about 15 minutes from DC and if you asked someone UVA or UofM, they would say UVA in a hearbeat. I live in Nothern Virginia and most people don’t even know the difference between MSU and UofM…It’s quite sad.

BUT it honestly doesn’t matter. Both of the schools are on the same level academically and you will be getting a FABULOUS education at either university.

I think this decision is going to be based of atompshere/campus and what your preference is."

Nova is not DC. Of course people in Nova are gonna think UVA is more prestigious. But, in DC, Michigan is more respected. This has been my experience from talking to educated people in business, politics, and medicine, not from some Joe Blow on the street who doesn’t know the difference between MSU and Michigan.

Also, tons of DC residents apply to Michigan because of the $10,000 tuition break they get for not having any worthwhile in-state university.

go with michigan. just seems like a more enjoyable college experience in my opinion.

i mean liberal students, activism, clubs, involvement, concerts, music, the arts, etc flourish on campus. it’s also got serious prestige.

in 1900, the top universities in the world were nine private and three public. michigan was one of the public schools. it’s really good. especially for interdisciplinary studies.

UVA has all of the things on your list as well. The music scene in Charlottesville is far superior to Ann Arbor’s and the same is true with the arts. UVA students are very active as well and many students join clubs just like UMich. Also, the average UVA student is slightly stronger than the average Michigan student if you look at the profile of the two student bodies. Also, why is having liberal students a bonus? You come off as being very presumptious, rude and heavily biased.

UVA was one of those three publics you mentioned as well. It is just as old and has just as much history and tradition as Michigan since it was founded by Thomas Jefferson himself. It is the only institute of learning in the United States to be designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

ringoffire, Charlottesville does NOT have a “far superior” music scene to Ann Arbor. The cities both have excellent music scenes. Of course, Ann Arbor is only 50 miles away from Detroit, which has one of the most active music scenes in the country, and that only compliments Ann Arbor’s excellent music scene.

I just got accepted into Emory today. So I guess now it’s now Umich v. UVA v. Emory
Personally I think Umich is a better fit (although I hate cold weather), but I am very worried that I probably didn’t get into Ross since I haven’t gotten a decision yet… and the fact that once I am in UM, it is not guaranteed that i’ll be in Ross…

Are you guaranteed McIntire? At any rate, a degree from Michigan (or UVa), whether from the college of LSA or Business is excellent. You will get a great education regardless of major.

UVa certainly WAS NOT considered one of the top universities in 1900. The three founding member public schools of the AAU in 1900 were UM, UCB, and Wisconsin. Also it has little visibility in the west and not that much in the midwest. The first published rankings of top schools in the 20’s did not include Virginia.

Today UVa’s reputation seems to be built more on its campus and Ivy reject students than the faculty quality. While it does have a few excellent departments many are substandard and have low morale–especially in the sciences. Read the following:

Not that it really matters but all the “business, politics, and medicine” people you are talking about who work in DC mostly live in Northern Virginia or Maryland. You won’t find the well educated and wealthy actually living in DC.

But I’m telling you, the majority of the older well educated people do not live in DC. You don’t have to take my word for it, I don’t really care. I’m just saying were not a bunch of nobodys.

I never said you were a bunch of nobodys. I was merely saying that the people I talk to on a regular basis reside in DC, not VA or MD. That’s all. Remember, this is based on my PERSONAL experience.

In my opinion, Michigan is better overall than UVA. Virginia is relatively weak in the natural sciences and engineering. Michigan isn’t weak in any area of study. I am always amazed at the rankings in USNWR. I honesty see Michigan as being a better school academically than at least 5-10 of those schools listed above it.

The student body of UVA is stronger than Michigan’s and that is how the majority of people decide if a school is “better”. No one cares if a school has slightly stronger areas of study or facilities.
