Oh, I know what a t-test is. I had to teach some people at Caltech what it was a few years back because their classes can be abstract to the point of uselessness.

Which does nothing to explain why UCLA has several THOUSAND more applicants than other top-notch UCs (Berkeley, SD, etc).

Doubtful. First, theyâd look at Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Pomona, UC Davis, U-Washington and UCSD. Then theyâd look for the best applicant between the other two. Michigan over UVa is not an obvious pick.

Me saying Michigan has a better national reputation is a âwild claim with no backingâ yet you implying that Michigan has a better national reputation is ⊠rational? Reputation isnât always objective, as Iâve said before. From my understanding and experience, UVA has a slightly stronger reputation (I live in the east coast), but people here still recognize Michigan as a pretty good school.

As for the historical aspect, I think anyone who visits the UVA campus will agree with me.

âFrom my understanding and experience, UVA has a slightly stronger reputation (I live in the east coast), but people here still recognize Michigan as a pretty good school.â

In the East Coast (not including NYC and DC, where both schools are equally highly regarded), UVa does indeed has a slightly stronger reputation.

I also think UVa has a stronger reputation in the South (not including Texas).

In the Midwest and West Coast, my experience has shown that Michigan has a slightly stronger reputation. Overall, nationally, they are both equally highly regarded. Internationally, Michigan has a stronger reputation than UVa.

Yes, I would agree that internationally, Michigan has a stronger reputation. Also, Michigan has one of the most (if not THE most) diverse student body for public colleges. That is something that many will appreciate.

This is an incredibly tough choice, one that I have to make, and what it probably comes down to is:
- What you want to major in
- How you like the campuses (UM Big, UVA Small-Medium)
- Are you in state?

Iâm in state for Virginia, and it is still (surprisingly) a tough choice, although I am leaning toward the in state options such as UVA and William and Mary.

GoWorld. Location, location, location. LA is far and away the second largest metropolitan area in population in the U.S. For a variety of reasons, itâs painfully obvious why it would have the most applications of any CA school.

when you are recognized as a UMich alum, even by strangers. Not sure what they shout out when they know you are a UVA alum. The only thing that comes close to the Go Blue shout out is the USC Fight On! shout out. Honestly I think UVA and UMich are probably a toss-up, but I bet UMICH has a better network, and a little more school spirit. The UMich kids are the most down-to-earth, unassuming students I have ever metâand among the most well-rounded.

I agree with a lot of your post pleaseadvise, but not with the bit about Michigan having the better network. When it comes to networks, both schools are hard to match. And although Michigan may have a littlemore school spirit, UVa more than holds its own in that department too.

Today I have to disagree with you Alexandre From a lifelong Virginia residentâs perspective, unfortunately UVA doesnât have the reputation of having the tremendous school spirit of Michigan (or even in this state Virginia Tech). It is pretty well known that the UVA fans âdonât travel wellâ and even when their football team occasionally makes it to a minor bowl game, they have trouble selling all of their allotted seats. Sadly, their fans are kind of fickle in support of some of the UVA sports.

I was amazed when watching the Michigan football games on TV this year and still seeing 100,000K people crammed into the Big House for a team that is rebuilding and going 3-9. Pretty cool stuff. Wouldnât happen at UVA.

KandKsmom, I respectfully disagree. I have lived in Virginia for quite a while (not my whole life), and UVA students have exceptional school spirit. Itâs not always in the form of pre game parties or football attendance, but letâs face it: Michiganâs football program is much better than UVAâs, and historically the best in the country (win percentage and total number of games won). Itâs hard to compare sports programs and single them out for school spirit, but UVA spirit is awesome. Itâs hard to describe, but just walking around the campus and talking to the students, they all seem to adore the university and are extremely proud of being a part of âJeffersonâs School.â

As for networking, UVA and Michigan are both excellent. Both schools have outstanding alums, and I certainly donât think one would have a clear advantage at either school in terms of networking.

controversy here we go
