UMich vs UWash

Hey everyone,

So I have been admitted to both the University of Michigan and the University of Washington and it's been really difficult for me to choose between the two. I am out of state for both schools (I live in CA) and have not received any scholarship/financial aid at either. I want to go to medical school after undergrad and I plan to major in some sort of biological sciences at both schools. Both schools have amazing medical schools and a strong biology department so which of these two schools do you think would best prepare me to be admitted to a top medical school like (harvard, stanford, and etc..)???

100% University of Washington. Great connections in the medical field.

really??? I felt like even though Washington’s med school is better than Michigan’s, Michigan’s is still great and Michigan is a stronger undergrad school in my opinion, but at the same time Washington’s undergrad is not terrible either

Overall Michigan’s undergrad school is better and more prestigious. However, both are excellent choices for someone going into medicine. It really comes down to which school has the better fit for you. Also, Michigan might be the better choice if you’re not 100% set on med school, since umich is more well rounded university.

First of all, UDub’s medical school is not better than Michigan’s. The two are about the same.

Secondly, if cost of attendance is the same, I would recommend Michigan. It is the better of the two universities. If you choose to go to medical school, both will present you with excellent placement opportunities, but if you change your mind and decide not to go for medicine, I think a degree from Michigan will serve you better.

Thanks guys for all your feedback! Any other opinions on the issue???

Michigan is a more prestigious name. However, the med school acceptance rate for its students at UofM isn’t great (~50% aka the same as the national average). I do not know that of University of Washington’s, but definitely worth investigating.

Btw, Michigan and Washington are both top medical schools.

WishfulWolverine, all public universities will have similar medical school placement rates (40%-60%) because they encourage all students to apply to medical school. When one quarter of your medical school applicants have no chance of getting in in the first place (sub-standard GPAs and MCAT scores by medical school standards), it is bound to impact the placement rate. If Michigan imposed similar advising standards as many private schools, it too would have a placement rate of 75%.

That does not mean that Michigan does not place students successfully into top medical schools. Qualified Michigan students place very nicely into medical school. On average, over 50 Michigan students are placed into Michigan Medical school annually. That alone is a huge number. Very few elite medical schools enroll more than 20 of from their own applicant pool.

In addition, Michigan is usually one of the 10 most highly represented university at most top medical schools. For example, here are the number of Johns Hopkins Medical students currently enrolled according to their undergraduate institutions:

Johns Hopkins University 74
Yale University 40

For what it is worth, Michigan is better represented than UDub at both JHU and and WUSTL medical schools.

Hmmm… Any in-state California options that would be cheaper for you? Medical school is expensive.

the best UC i got into was UCSB, I got screwed from the better UC’s and I really don’t like UCSB over UMich or UDub
