Umich vs Vandy

I don't know what to do! Should I early decision to Vanderbilt? I know for sure that I want to apply to University of Michigan. I have visited both schools and I love them both. My dilemna is that I feel that I need to Early Decision in order to get into Vanderbilt (I do hold the option of ED II but many students are applying from my school). My GPA is a 4.13 weighted over 4 and my course load is very heavy - I have many AP classes. My Sat's don't match up as well: 700 Reading 700 Math 670 Writing. My other assests include my international exposure; I spent 3 years living in Taiwan during middle school.

Though I love Vanderbilt, I feel that Michigan offers more opportunities. Am I correct in sayingthis? Meanwhile, Vanderbilt offers direct individualized attention and beautiful weather.

Other information that might help you to help me:
I'm interested primarily in Business (Administration and Managment) but I would also be content in Marketing, Sociology, or International Relations.

I'm also curious which school holds a better reputation overall, both domestically and internationally.

Also, please let me know if you think that my scores/gpa are high enough that I can Regular decision or ED II to Vandy

Thank you guys so much in advance, this is killing me.

“I’m interested primarily in Business”

[Best Undergraduate Business Programs | Rankings | US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/business-overall)

USNWR National rankings has Vandy at 17 and Michigan at 28. However the USNWR world rankings have Michigan at 14 and Vanderbilt at 131.

At the undergraduate level, both universities are excellent. You cannot go wrong either way. Reputationally, Michigan beats Vanderbilt by a slight margin anywhere in the US (except in the South, where Vandy has the edge), while it destroys Vanderbilt internationally.

Vanderbilt is virtually unknown in Asia.

Thanks for the insight, what would your personal choice be? Given your own reason?

You are asking the wrong crowd Justin. This is a Michigna forum!

Of course, but I’d love to hear what would compel you guys to choose Michigan.

The choice is quite obvious since you are interested in business. I don’t even know that Vandy has a business school … does it?

Anyone can provide your opinion/choice between Michigan and Virginia?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/1150518-umich-over-uva.html?highlight=michigan+vs+virginia

wayneandgarth, Michigan vs UVa (or Michigan vs Vanderbilt) is not a clear-cut choice. With the exception of Engineering, I would say that the two schools are roughly equal as far as undergrads are concerned.

As GoBlue points out, Michigan’s Business school is excellent while Vanderbilt does not have an undergraduate business program.

Justin, for me, it was the feel of the campus and the college-town setting that did it. Also, given my academic interests (Economics, History, Math, Political Science), Michigan was an exceptional choice as it is highly rated in all those fields. Finally, Michigan’s international reputation is very strong. Knowing that I would eventually live in Europe and the Middle East, that was important to me.

Thanks so much for your response buddy, it’s exactly what I’m looking for. I know that I will find myself in Asia in the near future so reputation is very important as you pointed out.

Justin, if you intend on living in Asia after graduation, I think Michigan would be the better choice.

Justin, one further consideration is that Ed at Vandy is binding, and while they’re usually quite generous, your financial position might influence whether or not Ed is wise for you at any school. At the same time, if you are out of state and of middling income, it could turn out that vary offers better aid (seen it happen). Best wishes in your application.

ED is not appropriate since you don’t have a dream school; you just get one FA offer and you have to take it or leave it. If you accept Vandy’s offer, you’ll never know if UMich might have done better; if you turn down Vandy’s offer, UMich’s might be worse (assuming you’re accepted by both schools). RD just seems better in this scenario.
