UMich VS Washington U in St Louis

I am an international transfer and got admitted into both schools.

I am kind of geek and want to dual major in Electrical engineering and physics.

Umich ranks higher in engineering program, but WashU has an excellent overall ranking. And WashU student have a higher middle 50% SAT scores, does that mean they more acomplished?

What should I choose?

Michigan>WUSTL for engineering. Next…

Or If I would like to be a quantative analyst, which one could I choose?

Michigan is ranked 7th in the country by USNWR. WUSTL is not rated in the top ten.

Thank you for reply.

That makes me confused. I found most of UMich’s undergrad or grad programs are among top 15, much better that programs at WashU. But why WashU ranks that high?

Only because WashU has more reputation? or higher faculty-student ratio?

xszhang, I highly advise you to consult with a counselor or anyone experienced. I suggest you pm a certain user by the name of “Alexandre”. He is a super moderator on CC and he should give you valuable advise and answers to your questions.

rjkofnovi is a ■■■■■ user on these boards. His fetish for UMichigan knows no bounds. Trust me, I’m not the only one who believes this. Look out for Alexandre and contact him. Ask your advisors and teachers for any input. And remember to visit! Undergrad education is pretty broad in general, so you really can’t go wrong.

“That makes me confused. I found most of UMich’s undergrad or grad programs are among top 15, much better that programs at WashU. But why WashU ranks that high?”

Many of us are confused about that as well xszhang. :-)

Just so you know, rjkofnovi is a hardcore Michigan fan who is also an alumni of the school. So, take it with a grain of salt.
So, here is the ranking for Quantitative Analysis that he provided:
1)MIT
2)Carnegie Mellon
3)UPenn
4)Purdue
5)UC Berkeley
6)Georgia Tech
7)U Mich
8)NYU
9)U of Florida
10)UNC Chappel Hill

So, will you also choose Purdue or Uof Florida or even U Mich over Yale, Princeton, and Caltech just because they’re not in that top 10 ranking?

Also, so what if UMich engineering is ranked than WUSTL? UMich engineering is also ranked a lot higher than Yale engineering. Will you choose UMich over Yale just because of a stupid ranking system?

My advice is you should ask the people at Fudan as I believe that WUSTL has some collaboration with Fudan. So, it should be easy to get some information about the school.

"

Nope. I would chose UMich, Princeton, or Caltech over Purdue or Florida because the first three are all excellent in engineering, among other disciplines.

"Also, so what if UMich engineering is ranked than WUSTL? UMich engineering is also ranked a lot higher than Yale engineering. Will you choose UMich over Yale just because of a stupid ranking system?:

Yes, if it’s for engineering.

Oh, I am a Fudan student right now. That explains why I apply for WUSTL.

Hey rjkofnovi, I didn’t know you were a big fan of USNWR:)

13 WUSTL >>>> #29 UMich

Shall we drag out the world rankings? The kind that exist in China? I didn’t think so.

"But why WashU ranks that high?

Only because WashU has more reputation? or higher faculty-student ratio?"

It’s because WashU is a more selective school. Also, it’s a much smaller school than UMich, so the classes on average are smaller than those at UMich. Also, it’s a private school. UMich is a public school and in USA, public schools HAVE TO take in a certain number of in state students (i.e. students from the state of Michigan) and the in state students can make up around 60%-90% of the university’s population. And since it’s hard to fill the quota of in state students while also maintaining a high SAT score average. Therefore, UMich average SAT score is lower than WUSTL’s. Hope that helps.

"Also, so what if UMich engineering is ranked than WUSTL? UMich engineering is also ranked a lot higher than Yale engineering. Will you choose UMich over Yale just because of a stupid ranking system?

Yes, if it’s for engineering. "

xszhang, as you can see…he is a weird Michigan fan. I wonder if you would do the same.

I thought that the higher ranking in USNEWS national ranking of WUSTL is due to the smaller classes, higher SAT scores and selectivity.

I just do not know whether the variety of courses at Umich could balance out its weakness on that?

@BearCub: That really helps.

“Shall we drag out the world rankings? The kind that exist in China? I didn’t think so.”

Sure, why not? But that’s provided we’re talking about graduate school. The nice thing about USNEWS ranking is that, it separates undergrad and grad school rankings. So, people can get a better picture of which school focuses on undergrad. UMich beats Princeton and a handful of ivy league schools in most of the world rankings, but people know it’s not really the case in reality. ;)

“I just do not know whether the variety of courses at a Umich could balance out its weakness on that?”

If you think that those measures are what make a university great, than by all means go to WUSTL. They are experts at manipulating their data to climb the USNWR overall rankings. The only ratings I trust at USNWR are the reputational scores of select programs and peer assessments. Those numbers cannot be manipulated easily by “honest” administators at certain private schools.

xszhang, have you contacted Alexandre already? It’s much more productive than this thread which is already contaminated by the embodiment of Michigan fetish…

“UMich beats Princeton and a handful of ivy league schools in most of the world rankings, but people know it’s not really the case in reality”

Here’s one where Princeton and a handful of Ivy League schools rate higher than Michigan.

Of course WUSTL is not one of those schools that ranks higher than Michigan in this list either. :-)
