^ So true.

OP: UMich is a great school, but since you're a Virginia resident, UVa is much more bang for your buck.

Aside from that, I could go to, and please don't get in a hissy fit, OSU. So, what do you guys think?

If The Ohio State University is cheaper OOS than UVa or VTech in-state, consider it.

BS about UMD. If you think you're going to get killed there , you'd be better off going to OSU

Dude, it's not bull. Look it up. Many parts of DC are not safe, and what with College Park being so close to those bad parts, its understandable for it to be a pretty depressing place.

And you guys are right. I just find it appealing that Umich has like, what, 50k students? Where as UVA has only 20k, and who knows how many of that will commute home on the weekends?

That's why I was also considering OSU. I mean, I don't think that OSU's academics are drastically lower than UVA or Umich. I mean, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the Professors aren't as esteemed, but I mean, I don't think the education I'd get at OSU would be terribly lower compared to Umich or UVA or any school at that reputation level.

True, but I've lived in Virginia my ENTIRE life. UVA is like, half an hour away, and I'm worried it will have the same "clique" attitude that my High School did. I get the feeling if I don't get out of Virginia soon, I'm gonna lose my mind, and the last thing I want to do is deal with elitist driving BMW's paid for by rich parents.

College is NOT the same thing as high school. Cliques in college aren't what they are in high school. I don't like generalizations, but cliques are not an issue at most universities.

Sure Michigan has a some wealthy students, but all schools do (esp. the "top" ones). Again, college is NOT high school. Snobbery is not an issue at most universities.

I would go to UVA if I were you. It's not worth paying the extra money for Michigan. It's too expensive OOS. Also, don't go to OSU. It's not in the same league as UVA and Michigan.

Blipsta, Michigan is exactly twice the size of UVa (25,000 undergrads and 15,000 grads vs 14,000 undergrads and 6,000 grads), but neither of those schools has a significant commuter population. I would estimate that over 90% of the students at both schools live on and right next to campus.

Definitely apply to Michigan as you could get a merit scholarship, but if you can attend UVa for less than $20K/year, why attend any university for over $40K/year?

I thought Michigan had around 50k students? Oh but thats likely taking the branch campuses into that isn't it?

I dunno, A bigger school just seems like it'd be more enjoyable. But I'll take everything you guys have been saying into consideration.

And I wouldn't say Snobbery is not an issue. Aren't there shirts saying like "Harvard: the michigan of th east. And "Michigan Against The World". And "Maize: An arrogant shade of yellow"?

Just examples I've seen.

"Harvard, the Michigan of the East" was an actualy quote from a Harvard alum and president of the US, JFK.

These days, many universities have similar shirts or slogans. I have a shirt that says; "Harvard... 'cause not everyone can get into MIT". Never mind that MIT is 250 years younger than Harvard, it is just a playful slogan by the folks at MIT.

And the "Maize: An arrogant shade of yellow" comment, that's just what Michigan opponents come up with...and there are many of those in the state of Michigan. Some are bitter because they couldn't get in, others are jealous of the University because it has such an excellent reputation, others were just raised to hate Michigan and others who feel the alums are too successful. The truth is, Michigan students and alums aren't generally arrogant, but they are proud and confident.

UVa is probably a better choice for you. Save your money. If you are considering paying OOS money for U-M, also consider Wisconsin. Very similar schools, Wisconsin is probably cheaper though.

Why would you ever think about paying more money to go to UMich when you can go to UVA for so much cheaper?!
