Umich

hey guys..is it true that UMICH is one of the more lenient universities? Is it the least competitive between NYU, CArnegie Mellon, Tufts and UVA? Please rank them in order of easier to most please. thanks

on the contrary, it's actually quite difficult to get an A in umich. they use a bell-shaped grading curve and i heard only a lower percentage of all students get A's.

Are you talking about getting into UMich or classes at Umich?

If you are talking about admissions, I would say for non-in staters, the toughest is UVA, followed by the rest.

As for difficulty once in, I would say they are all pretty tough. Michigan is notorious for grade deflation.

yea, im talking about admissions

Dachshund, Michigan's admissions system is very compartmentalized...partly to handle the extremely large applicant pool. If you are an URM or an in-stater, it is not that difficult to get in. For In-staters, a 1350 SAT with a 3.8 unweighed GPA (taking AP classes) pretty much guarantees admissions. A 3.6 unweighed GPA with a 1250 on the SAT gives the applicant a decent chance (30%) of getting in. For URMs, Michigan is even less demaning. However, for non-URM applicants from out of staters, Michigan is actually quite demanding. Students with less than a 3.5 unweighed GPA with less than a 1300 on the SAT have almost no chance of getting into Michigan unless they have taken a bunch of AP classes and are applying from an elite prep school.

By and large, if you are not an in-stater, I would say UVA is the toughest, closely followed by all the other schools you mentioned.

Alexandre, i know many people from stuyvesant that has been accepted to UMICH guaranteed if they have a 97-91 average. After that, there are still acceptances up to 86.1 average but not as consistent as the 97-91 group. there are even people waitlisted up to 84. Is it just safe to assume that umich favors stuy students?

Yes, University of Michigan knows of these highly competitive high schools such as Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Technical and Townsend Harris. All of these schools, I have found, have a lower "cut-off" GPA for accepted students than for the other neighborhood high schools in NYC.

I have never heard of Michigan "guaranteeing" anybody acceptance. I can guarantee you that a 97 student at any school with poor test scores will not get into Michigan.

As for the students who get into Michigan with 86% averages...it happens, if they:

1) are URMs

2) have solid SATs (well over 1300).

3) come from top high schools and/or have taken a very challenging course load.

But even then. the acceptance rate for such candidates is will not be that high. Most out of state students who get accepted into Michigan have unweighed GPAs over 3.7 and SAT scores over 1300.

This said, Stuy is certainly respected and Michigan reconized the quality of the school. But then again, students from Stuy with 91-97 averages probably get into many top universities. Still, like I said above, even if a student has a 97 average, accompanied by a SAT score lower than 1250, the chances of getting into Michigan are slim. Then again, what are the odds of a 97 student at Stuy getting less than a 1300 on the sat?

when i said guaranteed, i meant that everybody in stuyvesant in the year 2004 that applied t UMICH with a 97-91 average were accepted. I found this information according to the stuyvesant website college statistics

dachshund, can you provide a link?

Dachshund, that would not surprise me. Top students get into Michigan. Others do not. But it does not make Michigan easy to get into. If you aren't a top student, you won't get in.

dStark, im sorry i can't provide a link. it's only available to current stuy students and we use our student ID's and own username. it's not available to the public.

Alexandre, i agree with you that UMIch is not easy to get into. Isn't top 25?

Yes, Michigan is top 25...arguably much better (top 10 in most fields of study). Michigan admissions is actually easy to figure out. Top students will get in, most other students will not. But Stuy is an amazing school. Even students with 87% averages get over 1300 on their SAT and some of those students will get into Michigan.
