UMichigan Ann Arbor EA Class of 2021 Applicants

I emailed and received this. Is this an indicator that I won’t get in?

On behalf of our Director Erica Sanders and myself, I thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan. Please be assured that it will be noted in my evaluation of your application. The University received a record breaking 32,500 early action applications this year, so admission was very competitive. Unfortunately, your recalculated GPA of a 3.6 with multiple Bs and a few Cs in your 10th and 11th grade academic work made you less competitive than our top candidates. Last year’s average for our admitted class was a 3.87.

Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. Please submit your 1st semester senior year grades so they can be considered as we continue to assess your application. Other than your transcript, there is nothing further we need from you at this time.

As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you in early April. Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so although I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, I would also encourage you to explore the other opportunities available to you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Best Regards,
Kristin Heinrich

I think she is telling you that your GPA is not high enough because she took the time to recalculate it. Your chances are slim, but maybe if you show a ton of interest and get your counselor to contact them, that will help? I would have other options open.

Accepted early for LSA OOS. Is there a formal process for applying for merit-based scholarships? Or are you automatically considered if you submitted your application?

@dkcub17 you are automatically considered for most merit scholarships

@renwa Who did you send an email to and what did you say in your email that prompted you to get a very personal response to your email? Good luck! I hope it still works out for you to get admitted!

@ButterflyUSA I emailed my regional admissions counselor. I said I was deferred and UMich is my top choice. I explained the dip in my grades (I moved schools + countries junior year). I reported my new SAT scores and new leadership role. I also mentioned that I had completed 2 internships (one at a lab and one with orphans) over the summer and about how i am using my orphanage internship towards the nonprofit I currently lead.

who applied to the honors program?

I did @ab2020

My daughter emailed and received these responses back, not sure if they are good or bad:

On behalf of our Director, Erica Sanders, and myself, I thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan. Please be assured that it will be noted in my evaluation of your application and I will use this information to continue to advocate for your admission.

The university received a record-breaking 32,500 early action applications this year, so admission was very competitive and we were not able to admit all of the academically excellent students who applied. At the University of Michigan, we use a holistic and comprehensive review process that looks beyond a student’s GPA and test score. We are also assessing their curriculum, extracurricular involvement, leadership and awards, personal characteristics, and essays. Additionally, we gauge the level of interest the applicant demonstrates in the University, as well as their fit within our campus community.

Before we can make a final decision on your application, we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. Please submit your mid-year grades when they become available so they can be considered, but other than that there is nothing further we need from you at this time. As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you by early April.

Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so although you are still a very strong candidate for consideration, I would encourage you to keep the University of Michigan as an option but also explore the other opportunities available to you.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Alison

@Atty That seems to be the general email most people have gotten

I just got my financial aid award today!

Is it enough?

I just got a loan (which I won’t take because we can afford it since we are in state) and a $1500 merit scholarship but it’s still a very good price.

Yippee! Enjoy!

Does financial aid come out all at once? It’s rolling, I believe, right?

Well i just got an email at 3:30 its prob rolling just like decisions came out at different times

I was classified as OOS, but the HAIL scholarship for full tuition shows up on my financial aid statement. I’m confused…

does that mean you got a full tuition scholarship? that’s amazing especially for oos! congrats!

Maybe the scholarship determination of MI res is just different? It looks that way if you are getting it. You go to a MI high school, and that us where they look for HAIL candidate, so not terribly surprising.

@HRSMom You think I should call them and ask them, or should I just let it be?
