UMichigan Ann Arbor EA Class of 2021 Applicants

I’d let it be…its pretty new, but it says they choose from lower incom UM High School Seniors. I think it is to help MI HS kids afford the AA location. I don’t think the UM res thing matters?

Did all of you who received your aid fill out the css/fafsa early?

Yeah I submitted FAFSA in October and CSS in Nov or Dec.

what exactly is the regent scholarship? how many students get it and how do you

It’s a $1500 scholarship given to the top 1000 Michigan resident students bases on academic performance so like test scores, gpa, and class rank so like top 25% of total Michigan residents they accept (they accept 4200 Michigan residents total including early and regular)

So merit aid would have come out along with your regular financial aid, right?

yes, but there could be other merit scholarships that notify you later.

@CrabCakes735 you should definitely contact financial aid about this, the HAIL Scholarship is only for in state students only. If you werent notified about receiving the scholarship in august and it just popped up on your financial aid NOW, it’s probably a glitch. (I’m a current freshman at U of M who has the HAIL scholarship)

@Piccologirl I was notified in august too and i even recieved a letter congratulating me, but on ny application I was classified as OOS, so I dont know why they offered it to me before classifying me as in state

@CrabCakes735 if your high school is in state, you are considered in state.

@c011e9e I wish it was that simple

@CrabCakes735
That’s at least what I was told… I had the issue of being classified as OOS even though I’ve lived in Mi my whole life. It was because one of my parents was out of state.
When I talked to the office of the registrar, they said that was what the problem was and that it’d take approx 5 weeks to change at which point decisions would be made… So, as an IS applicant, I wanted that possible advantage and emailed my regional AO w my concerns if it wasn’t changed in time.
She said that they will view you in the context of where your high school is located.
May be different for scholarships, but just passing along what I know haha

Just checked my award and was given the Kessler Presidential Scholarship! I actually cried, getting free college to me is better than even getting in.

@tito17 CONGRATS!

Hello everyone, I want to ask if there is a honors program for Taubman College of Arch.? I know there is honors for LSA and Engineering. Is there one for Arch? I looked up but wasn’t able to find any useful info.

Thanks!

I dont think so but you can call and ask @RUHTRA999 taubman is super small so it probably doesn’t have one

@tito17 omg congrats!! how did you get a full ride?? Are you in state? Is it based on need?

@Eeeee127 thank you! yes, I’m in state, and I’m pretty the scholarship isn’t based on need, I truly think the main reason I got it is because of my essays, as they were the part of my app that stood out the most.

@tito17 wow that’s amazing! You definitely deserve this scholarship :slight_smile:

The Kessler scholarship was initially set up to help those that “otherwise would not be able to attend UM”. Unless the criteria has changed, you must have financial needs to get this scholarship. I hate to be a wet blanket on this conversation, but UM does not give a ton of merit money. Especially for OOS. Tons of applicants have 4.0 unweighted GPAs, 7APs… I know several valedictorians, 34+ACT, who’s parents have financial means, that received no merit money. My comments should not be confused with financial aid. You will get that based on need. However, most applicants, whose parents are upper middle class or higher, that are counting on pure Merit money, will be disappointed.

public elites do not give much merit aid to oos students. most top schools like the ivy leagues do not give merit aid, so students should not be surprised if they do not receive merit aid from umich. umich is a popular and prestigious enough school that it does not have to give merit aid to attract top students. if a student is looking for merit aid, they should aim for their state school or less selective schools.
