UMichigan Class of 2022 Early Action Deferred... What to expect?

Anyone have any information on what percentage of deferred students get accepted?

I had a 35 ACT (1st try), and am 3/230 in my class. I didn’t expect to get deferred. I applied as a BME major to the school of engineering, I’m OOS (Ohio). I have a low ACT writing score (yet my two 36s lie in English and Reading) so I’m suspecting that played heavily against me.

honestly I really don’t think that your low ACT writing score was the dealbreaker-- from what I’ve heard, many schools do not really even look at the writing score much as long as it isn’t very glaring… please take this with a grain of salt though as I’m sure it does not necessarily apply to every single school.

if your focus is BME/engineering, do you have enough extracurriculars that shows focus?

also, it could possibly be because you’re “overqualified,” not necessarily because of a high ACT because plenty of people with high ACTs still get in, but I’ve heard that if you have really high stats and very bland essays, admissions officers will assume it’s your safety and that you’re not really interested shown by your essays.

just offering my advice; again, it’s just my opinion not sure how credible it is haha

Someone mentioned that a rumor is going around that people got deferred since Michigan didn’t get to review all the applicants in time, does anyone know if this has any truth?

I participated in research, along with TEAMS and Science Olympiad. I am certainly a better writer now due to all the practice I’ve had, so many of my EA essays don’t compare, though I did spend time in my essays. I talked about a certain class I’d interested in taking at Mich, as well as their MultiDisciplinary Design Program. I also interviewed and I think my interview went very well.

I do appreciate your opinion, @heretoparty98, so thank you for offering it!

I’d just hang tight and continue to express interest.

Of my classmates that applied (most had great stats), all got deferred. From the looks of it tons of the OOS CoE kids (even those with high stats) got deferred - though some did get in. Here’s a bit of conjecture.

By now most people have realized that there are at least two variants of the deferral message. One of them has wording that refers to the Mid-Year report as mandatory, and when they look into the “Credentials” link in their application portal a they’ll find a new item regarding the Mid-Year report added to their required materials list. The other deferral message makes it clear that a Mid-Year report can be submitted if it helps, but is not mandatory, and they will not find the extra item in their required materials table. One classmate who had significantly lower stats received the first letter (even though his deferral decision wasn’t even posted on the portal), while those who had higher stats all received the second one in the portal. Logically, those who received the latter variant seem to be in better shape than those who received the former - those who require extra material to boost relatively lackluster grades.

Additionally, there is a rumor going around that Mich didn’t have enough time to go through all applications. I don’t have enough data to corroborate this as there was an instance of someone who applied OSS and CoE 2 days before the deadline getting accepted, but it’s possible that if you completed your application close to the deadline, you may have been autodeferred (i.e. in state applications are given priority, applications that haven’t been reviewed yet are run through an automatic system that assigns deferral type based on stats). The fact of the matter is that the admissions people don’t actually stay to the 24th due to Christmas Break, and there was talk a few hours ago that they were still apparently trying to review applications.

All in all, if you got the second variant of the deferral letter you shouldn’t be too worried. Nobody should be really stressed out. All deferral letter types have resulted in acceptances in previous years. There’s also the possibility of Tuft’s Syndrome - in which case just express continued interest.

D got defered we are OOS and. It around the corner any recommendations as to how to sho more interest

@TrapNumen That was not a rumor, but not for this year. At least it has no sign of it yet. They defer >80% from EA in recent years as they have shifted more admission to the RD round. With the ever increasing number of EA application, the percentage of deferal will increase. High stats do not guarantee admission at all, in EA or RD. But it is also not the reason of deferral (or rejection in RD).

Hi all!,
I do believe that the sheer quantity of applicants pushes a lot of decisions, especially OOS, to the RD round, based on my Daughter’s experience last year. There was also a lot of discussion about demonstrated interest - a lot of East Coast kids use Michigan as a Safety school who are applying Ivy League/Duke. Recommend you send an email to your admissions councilor reinforcing your interest - couldn’t hurt… That’s what we did.

Xmas was a very stressful time for my Daughter, but sometimes you just need to be patient and let the process work itself out. I know that’s not what you want to hear, but you do have until May to commit…

@MDmom2018 : as @gombater said, Recommend you send an email to your admissions councilor reinforcing your interest - couldn’t hurt… That’s what we are doing

Sure, if you really want to attend, send a note. If you just want to know if you can get accepted or need financial aid hang on, you’ll know by April along with financial aid which rolls out in March.

@gomestar , should we send the note to the AOs now to express the continued interest, or wait until the first semester grades available, so that it becomes a legit followup with additional material? Colleges don’t like being bombarded with communication from applicants - at least this is what I heard.

My child was accepted OOS despite sending similar stats to many deferred applicants, so if I had to guess, it was the fact that there were significant interests, including varsity sports and international exchange student experiences, in addition to a solid STEM background, that might have affected the outcome - but who can be sure? Good luck to all - I imagine many deferred applicants will eventually be admitted.

All I will say is Michigan was my daughter’s first choice school and based on her being in the same position as those who were deferred above, we took the advice of the forum and sent in an LOCI [Letter of Continued Interest] to her admissions counselor. We did not send in any additional info - grades, etc… just a simple message of if admitted she would commit to Michigan. Did get a form response back, no commitments. Not sure if it helped or not, but she was eventually admitted in the first round of RD announcements. [COE OOS]

should i send my LOCI now?!

@gombater , Thanks! When is the first round of RD announcement - early or mid February?

Is Michigan offering interview now? If so, was it on campus or with alumni student recruiter?

Something that helped us at another school and you might not think of it as continued interest but… Contact financial aid. Get an email contact. Ask questions. They “do” have contact with admissions. Also contacting departments people and ask questions. Not like everyday but just a question about a class or department that would be something you couldn’t just look up.

^ That does not help. The admission to FA office contact is one direction. No one would care to retro fit the info. Also, UMich does not admit into major directly with the exception of certain programs like music performance major. Only in the latter case may help by contacting the faculties. Don’t waste time on that. Focus on your school works and other school applications.

@GoBlue81
I had an interview in November after I applied through the HAIL program. It was with an alum who currently works in my hometown.

I think it was mid February, but not for sure. I think there was a large amount of decisions made monthly up to April. To be honest, once my daughter got her acceptance we didn’t track the process afterward so closely

You will know when the first round goes out - the forum topics will explode again…
