UMinn Twin Cities vs. Florida State University

I was admitted to both the UMinn Twin Cities and FSU for the Fall of 2013. I am already committed to FSU and was surprised to get admitted to UMinn after being waitlisted. I loved FSU when I visited and saw Uminn last summer and dont remember much! With May 1 approaching and seeing as though i just found out from Minn two days ago I'm kind of back up in the air. I am from Jersey and have my brother already out in Minnesota for HS. What are your guys' opinions on each school ? If you could choose one which would it be and why? Which has the best feeder program in terms of getting a job after graduation? ANy reply would definitely be helpful!

What is your intended major?
What is the cost difference?
Where do you want to live after graduation?

I’m not sure about the etiquette of recanting on a commitment following a waitlist admission; somebody else might comment on that.

I am deciding between athletic training, communication disorders, and maybe something like pre law so I really don’t know yet. About the same I think uminn is slightly yes. Ideally wherever I get a job is where ill live. Doesn’t matter.

I think UM is stronger academically than FSU.

Isn’t UMinn super cheap OOS as well?

Yes, it is.

http://onestop.umn.edu/finances/costs_and_tuition/tuition_and_fees/undergraduate_tuition.html

University of Minnesota is cheaper and better than FSU which is known as the school for UFlorida rejects. Florida has better weather, that’s the only advantage I see. This should be like choosing between Samsung Galaxy S4 and a Galaxy S. Galaxy S4 is obviously better and in this case its cheaper. So, you will have to be nuts to choose Galaxy S.

If you do decide to go to Minnesota, I wouldn’t worry about breaking your commitment to FSU. FSU would simply go to their waiting list and find your replacement in two seconds.

One thing to note, U Minnesota might change their OOS cost of attendance in the coming years:

You’re from Jersey and you have it narrowed down to Minnesota and FSU? That’s interesting and random. Minnesota is ranked as a better academic institution, but since it isn’t top 50(not positive), its not going to matter. You said you visited both, and loved FSU and don’t even remember Minnesota. Go with where you felt comfortable. That sounds like FSU. (That hurt me to say. Go Gators!) Good luck.

Naw - Minnesota is a very good academic school; much better than FL St. It is likely cheaper as well. Try to visit - you’ll love the campus on both sides of the Mississippi just out of downtown Minneapolis.

I don’t think these schools are that close. US News ranks Minnesota the #25 public university, Florida State #42. Among all universities: Minnesota #68, FSU #97. Minnesota has better students (middle 50% ACT 25-30, v. middle 50% 25-28 at FSU). Minnesota has top 10-ish faculties in fields like economics and psychology; and top 25-ish in history, political science, chemistry, math, physics, undergrad business, and engineering (but top 5 or better in Chemical Engineering). In many other fields, Minnesota is at least in the top 30 or 35. Florida State: well, not so much; it’s hard to find very many fields in which they rise to the top 30 or top 35 level, much less exceed it.

Minnesota is more highly rated by its peers (PA rating 3.6 v. 3.0 for FSU) and by high school counselors (Minnesota 3.9 v. 3.6 for FSU).

Student-faculty ratio, neither school is great, but Minnesota is 21:1 while FSU is 26:1.

In short, it’s difficult to find any metric on which Minnesota isn’t a clear-cut winner over FSU, except success on the gridiron, and possibly weather if you prefer hot and muggy to cold and sunny.

On top of all that, Minnesota’s cheaper.

But hey, it’s your decision.

I was put on the UMinn Twin Cities waitlist too.Did u make any efforts to get off the wait list?

yes but i didnt really think i would be accepted.
